College Football and Tailgating Thread
Edited on Sat Sep-22-07 12:07 PM by fishwax
There are several good games today, most of them in the SEC.

Georgia plays at Alabama (who pulled out a great win against Arkansas last week)
Arkansas plays at Kentucky (who pulled out a great win against Louisville last week)
South Carolina plays at LSU (in the only game featuring two top 20 teams)
Penn State plays at Michigan (and might actually beat Michigan for the first time in eight years)

Many of the other ranked teams are playing against lesser teams, but perhaps we'll still see an upset or two.

As for my team, the Oklahoma Sooners beat Tulsa 62-21 last night (even though all the announcers could talk about was the Notre Dame game :eyes:). That leaves me free to grill some quesadillas and fajitas, quaff some beer, and watch a whole lot of football :toast:

What game will you be watching today?

1. A couple of interesting scores as halftime approaches
Syracuse is beating Louisville 21-7 at halftime.
Florida is only up by one point late in the 2nd quarter at Ole Miss.
Virginia is beating Georgia Tech 21-14.

It looks like Ball State is giving Nebraska a good game as well--tied up at 7 in the middle of the 2nd.

2. I'm sitting here watching my Gators play..
Well, sort of playing. I expected an ugly game today by Florida. Big win last weekend, freshman/sophomore team, road trip, big game next weekend, all spells sloppy game. They should win, but it won't be a blowout.

3. That 98-yard drive was impressive, but
other than that it has, as you say, been pretty sloppy.

They did, though, just get a great sack that apparently knocked the Mississippi kicker out of his range.

4. I was equally offended by all the Notre Dame talk last night.
During the third quarter they also got on a long discussion about Kentucky. I'm planning to send ESPN an e-mail about the lousy job the commentators did last night.

The sad thing is that during the first half, when they were obsessing about Notre Dame, it was still a good game. Tulsa was giving the OU secondary fits with the long passes. If it was a complete blowout all along, I might be able to understand the Notre Dame talk, but the announcers just completely ignored the game while it was still fairly competitive.

By the way, did you catch what comment made the open microphone when they were interviewing Stoops at halftime? They apologized for it when the third quarter started, but I didn't hear it.

5. I missed the comment, and was kicking myself for it
b/c it was probably the best part of the broadcast

But you're right--they were missing a still-pretty-decent game with all that chatter. And they were missing important details, like penalties that they never bothered to show or explain :grr:. And as if it weren't frustrating enough to have to listen to them chatter for 15 minutes about Notre Dame, they got way too much face time, too. If you're not going to talk about the game that's taking place, the least you could do is freaking show it :grr:.

6. Thanks anyway.
I have some friends who watched the game that I haven't been able to talk to yet. If I find out what the comment was, I'll post it back.

Even with all the crap from the announcers, it was a decent game to watch, though I sweated a little in the first half. I had no doubt that OU would win, but I was a little worried about how it would be perceived by the people who vote in the polls.

32. people just can't stop talking about Notre Dame!
I think it's an ingrained obsession - I have loved Notre Dame since I was a young kid. (Irish Catholic)

But they've been doing so poorly - it really doesn't make sense to ramble on about them when there is another game doing on.

47. especially on the offensive line
Colt McCoy looked great last year, but part of that was definitely an experienced offensive line.

As excited as Sooner fans have been about Sam Bradford's play as a Freshman--and justifiably so, because he's been great--it's worth remembering that he's got one of the best offensive lines in the country protecting him (to say nothing of the talent he's throwing to and the depth at running back he can turn to).

But OU-Texas is always fun, no matter what either team has done beforehand :)

20. Watching Penn St v Michigan ...

And, amazingly enough, Michigan is ahead into the 2nd quarter.

Penn St. is beating itself though. Michigan's defense is just not good at all, too slow and bad tackling overall. Penn St. receiver just had the defender beat, and Morelli threw a really crappy pass that should have scored them a touchdown.

I think Penn State is overrated and that Michigan can't possibly be as bad as they looked those first two weeks, but I'm still surprised that Michigan is ahead and apparently driving for another score. I've only just tuned into this game, but it looked like Mike Hart is starting to look the part ...

Edited on Sat Sep-22-07 03:53 PM by RoyGBiv
He was good against Oregon, the problem being he was the *only* thing that was good and was out most of the second half. Meanwhile Michigan's defense continue to be completely incapable of facing off against a spread offense. I couldn't believe how s-l-o-w not just their backs but the linemen were.

I must say Mallett has potential. He's obviously inexperienced but should come along with some seasoning.

I agree that Penn St. seems to be playing down to its true potential. Even if they end up winning this, they're not looking very impressive.

OnEdit: And Michigan's kicking game continues to suck wind.

22. Washington vs. UCLA
My two favorite Pac-10 teams, and the only match up this season between African-American coaches (there are only 6 in the top tier of college football, sadly).

UCLA took a beating in Utah last week, and surely they will be sharper back at home, but the Huskies are improving each season under Ty Willingham. I am going to enjoy this one.

I haven't really seen UCLA play this year, so I don't really know what to expect from them--the score against Utah was just bizarre, especially since Utah hadn't exactly looked brilliant in their first couple of games.

When I've seen Washington play this year they've looked better than I expected. I think that should be a fun game to watch.

He basically called himself an idiot, if I remember correctly. Hard to inspire a team when you're talking like that to the press.

I always knew OU'd be alright without Mike, of course, but I really was surprised that he wasn't able to turn Arizona around. Especially after that first year, when his team lost so many games at the last minute. I don't know if it's his temperament, as many have speculated, or what exactly the problem was, but I think he'll be moving back to DC somewhere after this season is over ...

I know that Texas isn't quite as good as it used to be. Colt injured himself last season and they lost several players to the NFL. And have you seen USC, LSU, and OU? They look a bit, er, muscular. Sorry to be so uppity, 'n all. Texas is flat-out lucky to be in the top ten.

But beating up on Rice? Damn. And in Austin? Amazing! If only Texas could be so lucky!

Current score: Texas 48, Rice 7.

67. I agree with you there
I wasn't yet an OU fan when that rivalry was at it's peak, but I still remember watching it every thanksgiving. By the time I got to OU, the Sooners were in decline--and just about to fall off the edge of the world. At least Nebraska hasn't hit the lows we did in the mid-90s, but the rivalry still isn't the same these days.

Bill Callahan hasn't been good for that rivalry either--most OU fans thoroughly despise him after the "hillbilly" remarks he made in Norman back in '04. From what I see, Nebraska fans aren't too fond of him these days either.

I dunno--one way or another it would be nice to see that rivalry back to something approximating what it used to be ...

70. I lived in KCMo during the height of the rivalry
each year the caravans would be headed either north toward Lincoln or South toward Norman.

The big RV's would be blasting the fight songs.

It was a great rivalry - I miss the Big-8.

I am still a Husker fan - but a Nebraska-Colorado rivalry will never compare with the Husker-Sooner rivalry of the 70's.

Jack Milburn - Jerry Tagge. Now that was football.
