What triggers that flaming icon in the first column?

Do the mods do that? Is there a button to do that? Is it based on something? Anyone know?

I do laugh when I see that flaming icon next to a seemingly innocent thread like "what I had for breakfast" and there is 50 replies.

13. Actually, it was an honest question.

I've been here two years and could never figure out the flame. I looked for flame buttons, I looked for moderator messages, etc. I always assumed it was to indicate some fight.

Now, it is sort of like finding out Santa doesn't exist, I won't be laughing anymore at the flames on 50 post breakfast threads. Maybe I shouldn't have asked...some of the magic has died.
