Where the Road Takes You


We don’t know where the road will go...

But out the door we must

Following the twists and turns...

Ups and downs,

Be it level, smooth or bumpy...


How different our lives would have been

If we hadn’t gone down that road

So long ago.


Now the road has put us here

And we stand face to face with ourselves.


The world has fallen away

There is a great vacant land between us...

I’m waiting for you to enter my soul

And take possession...


But you hesitate

Is the road calling you away?

Ah, go if you must...

Follow your path!



Has tomorrow stretched out its hand?

Has it seduced you?


I am weaving a seductive web

But you tear away

Down the road towards the future...

You’re leaving me here



And I will travel the road alone...

THE DRUMMER

I hear the different drummer;
a wanderer am I-
A seeker of a different thing
that is still undefined.
I listen to the questions
so persistent in my head,
and try to find the answers
to the things that have been said.
It's lonely on this dusty path;
I'm tired, and I fear-
but I will search until I find
the drummer that I hear.

14. I must have been all of 23 when I wrote that.

It could stand a rewrite, but I think I'll let it stand as is. It meant a lot to me when I wrote it and I still like it, especially the final lines.
