1. You're right
He sang many songs about things that used to be part of our heritage, but are now forgotten. It's a real pity- in another generation nobody will know what Boot Hill was, who Johnny Yuma was, who Ira Hayes was, what John Henry did with his hammer, what the Orange Blossom Special was....

History forgotten is history lost, and Johnny's songs contained one hell of a lot of important American history and folklore, most of which will now fade away.

2. I loved how Johnny was able to bring together so many diverse
people. Hippies and rednecks would sing with Johnny at the same time.

And 'Live at San Quinton' is one of the best live albums ever. I was lucky enough to see Cash and the other Highwaymen at Farmaid- must've been around '94 or so. The guy had heart, brains, and balls.

5. It's because
(imho) Johnny was not a country singer, nor a rock singer. Not even a folk singer - He was an AMERICAN SINGER... He took a song and with his gruff voice made it a whole genre unto itself. I know I may sound like I am overstepping my knowledge base here but I am speaking from my own reaction to this mans music.

I love The Highway Men -- Deportees - It makes me cry every time I hear it. Woodie Guthrie wrote it and The Highway Men made it even greater...

DEPORTEES
by Woody Guthrie

The crops are all in and the peaches are rotting
The oranges are filed in their creosote dumps
They're flying 'em back to the Mexico border
To take all their money to wade back again
Goodbye to my Juan, farewell Roselita
Adios mes amigos, Jesus e Maria
You won't have a name when you ride the big airplane
All they will call you will be deportees
My father's own father, he waded that river
They took all the money he made in his life
It's six hundred miles to the Mexico border
And they chased them like rustlers, like outlaws, like thieves
The skyplane caught fire over Los Gatos Canyon
The great ball of fire it shook all our hills
Who are these dear friends who are falling like dry leaves?
Radio said, "They are just deportees"
Is this the best way we can grow our big orchards?
Is this the best way we can raise our good crops?
To fall like dry leaves and rot on out topsoil
And be known by no names except "deportees"

6. Agreed.
And he's one of the few country artists (Willie Nelson is another) who non-country fans can still appreciate.

9. When I was in high school in the late 50s, my friend's dad owned
a radio station in a small Louisiana market. Once Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis came to a local high school to perform a promotional concert. Because of my friend, I was able to attend and get backstage completely free. It is one of my most cherished memories.

16. Yes
he was a true artist.

In many ways I think his later work was his best work although he clearly was in poor health for some time before his passing.

Rest in peace, Johnny.
