7. Urgh.
This game is making me sick to my stomach... The ecstasy of having runners on base in the bottom half of the last inning... The agony of the Padres getting runners into scoring position inning after inning after inning... Bleh...

Still, go Rockies!

...then we have to face Trevor Hoffman. I do NOT want to see him in this game.

On to the 13th! :scared:

15. Meh, he can be had
Dodgers messed him up late last season. Went into the ninth trailing 9-5 and got four straight homers — the second two off Hoffman — to tie it. Madres got a run in the 10th, and the Dodgers won it on a two-run walk-off by Garciaparra in the bottom of the 10th.

One of my favorite. nights. EVarrr. :bounce:

Unbelievable. This is a classic game and it ends on a badly made call. I think the guy was probably safe, but the ump wasn't convincing.

59. No, you're right. They're already talking about it on ESPN.
That call is going to be questions and dissected for years. The Padres might have a right to feel burned by that call. I do think he might have slipped a finger onto the plate as he slid by, and the ump waited to make toe call to see if the catcher actually held onto the ball.

But, then again, I'm a little biased.

I'm just bummed that Games 1 and 2 are at 1:00pm Colorado time - I'll be at work! I might still be able to listen to the game on the radio, but it's not the same as being able to watch it and scream at my TV.

The good news is that if the Rockies manage to get the series to a Game 4 I'll be going! Next Sunday, at Coors Field, 8:00pm Colorado time.

85. McCLellan behind the plate had one of the most brutal games I've seen an ump have for awhile
He gave Peavy about four inches on both sides of the plate, six inches up and a few inches down for most of the game. Otherwise, it would have been over by the third or fourth. Peavy had nothing. Then, once Peavy left the game, he continued giving Bell a wide zone, but for everyone else, his zone shrunk tighter than his sphincter did on the final play at the plate. He wouldn't call a frigging strike for anyone. He consistently missed balls and strikes up, down and sideways. It must have driven the hitters crazy not knowing where the zone was.

On the homer (having sat in those leftfield seats fifty times or so over the years with my late handicapped buddy), to hit anything hard enough to make the ball ricochet back onto the field, you have to hit it over the yellow pad. The rail is behind the pad. That was a bad one that went the Padres' way.

Go Rox.

We have two hot teams playing each other - the Phils and the Rockies. The best team doesn't always win the World Series - you have to be a hot team in the playoffs.

As for the call, he might have gotten the edge of the plate. Hard to tell. If I was an ump and couldn't tell, I'd say out. Maybe he saw it better.

Night, all! :hi:

74. The altitude hasn't been quite as much as a factor the last two seasons.
The Rockies keep all of their game balls in a specially calibrated humidor to make sure the balls stay exactly the way they were when they left the factory. The result is a softer ball, as opposed to the rock-hard pellets the Rox used to toss around during the era of the frequent 12-11 game. Altitude is still a factor, but it has been reduced to a degree, thanks to the humidor.

77. I didn't know they had such a short porch in Philly
329 down the left-field line.

14-foot fence, though.

80. I've seen many fly balls turned into home runs in that park
and they moved back the fence 10 feet after the first season

83. Ebbets Field was weird, too
The second deck in center field stuck out, so every so often you'd get an guy camped under a deep fly ball and it'd land in some fan's lap.

That's what Willie Mays and some others said, anyway. Doesn't look like it's possible.

73. Just as long as they don't put Jorge Julio on the mound again...

I think it'll be a great series. If our starting pitchers ca n keep the game close and hand it over to the bullpen, I think we have an excellent shot at actually winning this series... But it sure won't be easy...

On edit: Apparently I can't spell when I'm thrilled about the Rockies going to the playoffs. :woohoo:

79. Ugh. Tell me about it.
It seems like he gives up hits or runs every time he pitches. Something tells me he WON'T be on Colorado's playoff roster. My, my... What a shame that would be, wouldn't it? What a shame!

:sarcasm:

82. Y'oughta yell the same thing at him
as my friend once yelled at Felix Jose when he was in the minors:

"Ah, get a last name!"

81. A lot will depend on pitching
As long as we can avoid Eaton, the Phils might be in good shape - LOL. The pitching was a huge question mark, but has been a lot better lately.

Looking forward to an exciting series. :hi:
