Poll question: so I know he'd appreciate both
My son needs clothes pretty badly and he knows it. But he also expressed interest in a cheap combo amp (I found one for about $60).

So, what do I get him for his birthday? If I buy the amp, that's all I can afford to get him. (Meaning I can't get the amp and also buy him some shirts.)

He also expressed interest in a hardcover set of all 7 Harry Potter books. Thankfully it's not out for another 12 days, because frankly, it's about twice what I wanted to spend on him.

(And yes, besides this, I'm cooking a special dinner tonight.)

1. I believe
gifts should be what the recipient wants rather than needs. (unless those happen to be the same)

I'd get the amp, but that's just me. :)

2. what are other family members giving him?
money? gift cards to said bookstore?

Grandmas are always a good hit up for the shirts you know. Gift card to store of choice.

HP would be a great Christmas gift, as would the amp .

be sure and get a Borders "membership"..unlike B & N, no joining fee and you get good discounts and offers, which you can use on the HP set..or order from AMAZON, no shipping fee.

you may need to say "look kid, what do you want most NOW?" and what would be nice for Christmas? My daughter was born 3 weeks before Christmas and I shopped for both all year...then on her birthday I sorted into the "B" pile and the "C" pile LOL

8. at his age he has outgrown getting presents from the rest of the family
they are likely to send a card, but not send a gift.

We're a very big family. If we all had to buy for all of us... we wouldn't eat.

3. I'd go with the amp - music lasts forever and brings joy.
Clothing? Feh. He can wear some old shit until he grows another inch or two and would need a new wardrobe again anyway.

And as a boy, the World's Most Disappointing Birthday or Christmas Gift is clothing.

7. believe it or not, he's never been like that
I even made him a BLANKET one year and bought some sheets to go w/ it and he LOVED it.

He receives all gifts really well.

But he will really like the amp.

I just hope he remembers we live in an apartment.

6. how about
an amex or visa gift card. That way, he can use it anywhere and he can decide if he wants to spend it on the amp, clothes or the Potter books.
