Should I start a bog?
I am concerned about wetland losses due to habitat destruction.

1. Absolutely
If enough people blog, the wetlands will stay wet.

Go for it.

3. Walking through a wetland is a real interesting experience.
Never wear anything that you really care about and make certain you are not alone. You may need someone's hand to help you, and vice versa.

But it was an amazing experience. It was on private land and I was with the owners.

4. I've done a lot of that
I'm a biologist. Wetlands are some of my favorite places. Where was this wetland?

6. Elburn, IL.
Maybe 50 miles due west of Chicago. The owners were planning to develop part of the land for residential and retain the wetlands as an amenity. As far as I know, they never succeeded and someone else probably bought the land and did the gods know what to the wetland. Elburn is a major residential growth area.

10. In Illinois, you have to replace wetlands that are displaced.
The owners of the land at the time I visited were in the land-planning business and very sensitive to wetlands. They were a client of the PR firm I worked for at the time. Sadly, the business encountered some financial problems and they had to dump my company.

They really wanted to do a good job of retaining the wetlands, which does make it a shame.

Elburn is such a center of growth that they actually extended a commuter rail line out there from a town maybe 8 or 10 miles to the east. That required an enormous investment and I am certain that it was paying off.

Personally, my father's mother's father was born in Elburn, back in the 1850s. LONG before my time.

;)

11. IMO I understand the policy, but it's limited
I think it's a good thing that wetland losses are mitigated, however, there's only so much that a constructed wetland will be like an existing one that has been there years and years. It takes time for the community to develop fully.

13. "Mitigated'. thanks..
That was the word I wanted, but could not think of at the moment. Call it a "senior moment". :(

This particular property had non-wetland land, and that was where the owners planned to build. They did not plan to disturb the wetland. What the ultimate purchasers did, I have no clue.

is time to remember that the original objective was to drain the swamp.

Look, I could go on like this all night but I'm swamped with house guests so, I'm headed to Marsh to restock the pantry. (I see you are nearby)

23. Oh yes, they're very handy things to have.
Both for wildlife reasons, and for body dumping uses if the need ever arises.

Especially here in the south, where we have gators that will get rid of any evidence for you.

26. why not ? Every neighborhood needs a place for the winos in old raincoats to go
Sun streaking cold
an old man wandering lonely.
Taking time
the only way he knows.
Leg hurting bad,
as he bends to pick a dog-end
he goes down to the bog
and warms his feet.
