1. That song always makes me sad.
Edited on Sun Oct-07-07 02:37 AM by Heidi
It always reminds me of former Nebraska Sen. Bob Kerry. "Waltzing Matilda" was often played at his campaign events and campaign events. Kerry's said it's an emotional song for him, too. :hi:

3. He's no longer in the political arena.

After he left office, he became president of The New School in New York City.

But there are rumors that Kerry might be returning to Nebraska to run as the Democratic candidate for retiring Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel's senate seat.

4. If you can listen to the original Eric Bogle version, I think you will
agree that it's the best version made.
It seems to communicate the futility of war very well.

7. I'm not sure what you mean by "plain" original.
Eric wrote the song and was the first to record it.

A similarly moving anti-war song. This time Vietnam. We never learn.......yet

6. Very moving
Until last April, I knew nothing about Gallipoli and ANZAC Day in Australia.
I really wish more Americans knew about this battle which indeed does reflect the futility of war in many respects.
There is a very good movie about Gallipoli, even if it stars Mel Gibson (bleah). A very young Mel Gibson. As the person who told me about it originally, the movie is a great illustration of the Australian principle of "mate-ship" something I think we could learn a thing or two from in this country
