An evil James Bond-style villain kidnaps you and strands you on an island - what do you take?
Edited on Sun Oct-07-07 01:55 PM by Rabrrrrrr
We don't know why he kidnapped you, as he has no intent of ever letting you go, nor of ever telling anyone he captured you. Plus, he feels the insane need to ensure you will always have ample food of your choice, whatever you ask for, and the proper resources to prepare it; medical care for life; a comfortable place to live with air conditioning and a furnace; as much booze as you want; whatever clothing you would like, no matter how expensive the brand name.

The only caveats are that he will never allow anyone to visit you on the island, nor allow you to ever communicate with another human being except for the daily filling out of the menu, and the evil bastard only allows you to bring one of the following choices with you:

1. One CD/album and a thing to play it on
2. One movie and a thing to play it on
3. One book
4. One instrument, with infinite replacements on strings/reeds/etc.
5. A kite (not big enough to escape with, though)
6. A favorite billboard (remember, he's psychotic, he thinks this is a good option)
7. A tray of paints and ONE canvas
8. A pool table, with balls, rack, chalk, and sticks (all usable - no tricks)
9. A journal and a pencil
10. A photograph of a loved one
11. A case of Brillo pads and a Daisy Duke lunchbox
12. A current newspaper of your choice delivered every day

Which option do you choose, and within that option, what is the choice (for the ones that have choices)?

I'm pretty sure I'd opt for a book, and it would most likely be the Bible. Possibly Dune. But probably the Bible. I might opt for an instrument, in which case I'd take a guitar. But it would bother me not having something to read, and musically I can always sing to get my musical fix.

And so - per the rules, I have to choose - I'd take my NRSV Oxford Annotated Bible.

1. A journal and a pencil.
I could try to re-write things I'd read, or try to illustrate the dreams I had, or poke the bastard in the eye with it.

3. I don't know how I would survive without my loved ones.
I would probably take a picture of my husband -- though I know it would provide no entertainment over a long period of time. I'm sure it would eventually be torturous to look at (knowing he's out there probably moving on with life). But I would still take it.

34. You must read
Red Dragon -

Hannibal is the best of the trilogy but it is the third --- read them all in order and you will not believe how much better the books are than the movies -- RD and SOTL are both very, very good movies - (Hannibal- the movie, is a POS)

I love them so....

14. The villain has to be Alec Trevelyan
And I'd take a journal and a pencil. From there I really don't need the rest, except maybe the music. I'd really miss that. But Alec would more than make up for it. ... :9 :9 :9

26. Oh, the newspaper.
It's the only thing that would break up the monotony. I mean, hell, even if I got the unabridged version of "The Stand", how many times can I read the same book before I start using it for toilet paper?!?!?

At least with, say, NYT I get plenty to read every day. No comics, though. :-(

Maybe I could eventually make a paper-maché boat and sail to freedom!

Edited on Sun Oct-07-07 11:07 PM by Aristus
No question about it.

I'm actually a Shakespeare dilettante, William Shakespeare's Thought For The Day notwithstanding. On a deserted island, with all my other needs taken care of, no other distractions and no one interrupting me, The Riverside Shakespeare would help me get to the bottom of the subject.

33. pool table
take it apart. top can be made into a raft, side pieces become paddles, other pieces along with pool cues can be made into frames for a sail covered with the felt topping from the top, and a rudder..

pool balls, when bundled together can be used as an anchor, or ammo to throw at James Bond-style villain or sharks

38. The New York Times.
Doesn't matter how much I like a book or how long it is, I'd get damned sick of it after awhile. The only other possible option would be the instrument, because I can't imagine how good I'd get if I had forever to practice. :) I'd choose a piano, I think. A Steinway baby grand.
