Poll question: So, what kind of post-apocolyptic world do YOU want to live in?
I saw "Resident Evil: Extinction" a couple of days ago, and since I've also seen fairly recently movies like "Dawn of the Dead" and "Deep Impact", and I'm readin the "Dark Tower" series (by Stephen King) it got the mental juices flowing a little.

So, what say you, Lounge Lizards?

Myself, I pick the zombies. At least the remains of civilization would be untouched, they are pretty easy to identify as "bad", and they don't shoot back. There's a certain simplicity there that appeals to me.

1. Nuclear Holocause, for sure
Aside from lingering radiation, once the blast is over, you can at least begin to rebuild. I would take that over having to spend my days fighting zombies/aliens. Also, with an economic meltdown, you would probably see mass violence anyways, IMO it would probably result in more deaths over time than a nuclear holocaust.

5. Hmmmm... good points
Hadn't thought of that.

The mutations, though... ooch.

I always figured that, with the zombie thing the best thing to do would be to get a group of survivors together and occupy something like a sailing yacht or something. Stage resupply raids on small shoreline communities. Eventually take over and occupy a small island, one that you could easily clear of zombies, and use that as a base. Eventually move on to more islands, until you could retake part of the mainland.

Do you really think the rapture would save the likes of Coulter & limbaugh? The fundies would be the ones left behind.

Many think the fast-moving zombie is an abomination.

As for me... the slower the better. Gimme a scope-sighted rifle and a clock tower so I can thin'em out a little...

12. I'd file that under "Economic collapse"
IIRC it was a severe oil shortage that led to the collapse of civilization, yes? The costs of oil rose too rapidly for our economies to adjust, so that our dispirsed manufacturing and agriculture system could not function without a massive reworking.

And no Tina for me, thanks. Now, if you can serve up Kari Byron, Laura Prepon, or Emma de Caunes in that outfit, well, bring on peak oil!

13. Other... a good portion of the population dies out for some reason
probably a disease that some are naturally resistant to.

Enough people are gone that the basic infrastructures fall apart. We start over with farms and small towns, work our way back up to having cities.

I was actually working on a story based on that a while back. :) Put it aside when I realized that following a single character was going to be rather boring, it had to have an ensemble cast for any decent interaction to happen.

15. The kind where some weird bacteria wipes out all the stupid people
Edited on Mon Oct-08-07 09:08 AM by Rabrrrrrr
Leaving behind the 5% of us who use our brains to reconstruct a world of goodness and wonder, but without the readily available armies of the ignorant to do the shit work that they are so uniquely designed to do and that they've done for millennia for the benefit of the intelligent. But on the plus side, the newspapers, TV news, and TV itself have nothing about sports, nor about celebrities who do stupid stuff (because the only celebrities left are the smart ones).

Said bacteria remains in the environment forever, and immediately kills all newborns that will become stupid people.

25. I've heard about them for years
and the both of them were on sale for quite a while in a 10 dollar set. Of course, every time I went to the store and it was there, I didn't have ten bucks to spare because I was a poor college kid by that time. And every time I had 10 bucks to spare, it wasn't in stock.

I finally (arrrr) 'procured' a copy just recently to give it a try. Haven't gotten that deep into it yet, but I can see how it can be addictive. :)

27. But you do know that in that event
you would be totally entombed and kept alive only for sperm harvest, right? Sort of like a weird blue pill version of the Matrix, only with less tubes and no giant headphone insertion point in the back of your neck.

I mean, we'd feed you and water you but honestly? It wouldn't be very much fun for you. You've seen those milking machines they use on cows? I can't imagine that as a future destination would really rock the house. Sure, maybe once or twice it'd be a novel rushy sort of cool thing but after a year or two? I'd think it'd get old.

'course I probably shouldn't really make that assumption - everybody's got their niche in life, right? ;)

I'd choose the Dark Tower post-apocolyptic world.....you just have to watch out for mechanical bears, and exploding Harry Potter Seekers.....oh, and be careful which doors you open, and don't let the lobsters bite your hand/fingers off either....oh, and beware any Beatles songs(especially Hey Jude)...

The people are enslaved under tyrannical masters - a la, the Empire in Star Wars... or, the Lord of the Rings if Sauron had won. (or, is that the choice where you should vote for Bush?)

I say that because eventually, some hero will rise to overthrow said Dark Lord.

I'd just as soon die. I have read enough apocalyptic novels to know that my life as a woman would be reduced to cleaning up after the menfolk and being a baby factory (or a receptacle for rape and other sexual abuse). So, no thanks.

I guess I believe that the veneer of civilization is very thin and we are all basically animals.
