If you were a manager, would you hire me?
I can write.

I can organize.

I'm fairly good at task and people managing.

I can speak.

I clean up well.

Will you hire me? PLEASE??? ((beg beg beg))

1. If I were offering a job, likely I would.
For good or ill, however, I am not currently a manager.

But I hope someone with the power will hire you.

4. I'm overeducated for my area. People get freaked out when they see my resume.
It's a little disconcerting.

11. If that's the case,
set up another resume that is toned down to fit your area. You can leave certain facts out as long as what you leave in is true.

13. Yar. I did that earlier this year in search of a small bookstore job.
Although it left two years unaccounted for (my graduate school years.) I also haven't worked steadily for five, including those two years.

That's also good advice - thanks again!

12. Is that right?
:loveya:

You should have heard what I was just playing -- John Coltrane's "Interstellar Space" -- just saxophone and drums.

14. I love me some John Coltrane.
I love hard bop and bebop. What do you think of the more artsy albums, like Miles Davis' Bitches Brew?

18. World's biggest Miles fan here.
I have almost everything he's ever done -- Coltrane, too.

In fact, I was playing Kind of Blue on my iPod last night while I was on the Staten Island Ferry, with the Statue of Liberty and Lower Manhattan in the distance -- freaking amazing.

:D

19. I've ridden that ferry several times.
And I've taken many a relative because it's a good way to see the Statue of Liberty for free.

And I remember their playing that horrible fusion crap on the PA system. Really terrible. Ugh!

But Kind of Blue has to be one of the best jazz albums of all time.

5. As a manager,
I would want to see your resume and contact some of your references. But, it you came to an interview willing to speak up for yourself, as you have done in your post, I would certainly give you strong consideration.

A tip: If possible, always try to research the places that you are seeking employment at. Knowing a little history of a company makes you come across as being especially sincere in your commitment to work there.

21. Caty makes an excellent point in that you should know a little about the
company in which you are seeking employment. Expressing that interest makes it feel like you are already there and part of "the team"

However, if "the team" asks you to participate in weird office initiation rituals ( usually involving stripping down naked and dancing around with a lampshade on your head ) you may want to consider another company...

You can never be too careful............

24. One of the worst job interviews I've ever participated in...
was for marketing work for a small chiropractic clinic in the area. They called me to set up the interview. When I arrived I noticed a dozen others there. It was actually a GROUP interview, and they asked us to stand up in front of the other interviewees for impromptu song and dance presentation about ourselves. It was rather unprofessional, I felt. They should have at least notified us.

They actually called me back for a second interview, but I declined to be interviewed again because I was so turned off by the process.
