Hospital story - laugh or scream?
my partner's brother is in the hospital, he's ok doing well - nothing life threatening, but this story doesn't concern him directly so I won't go into all the details

it concerns his "roomie" in the hospital and hospital food.

the roomie is diabetic, and is also being treated for stomach problems. He is not on insulin, the diabetes is pretty much controlled by diet.

His breakfast this past friday consisted of 2 boxes of dry cereal (corn flakes) and a pat of butter. No milk, no toast, no coffee.. just the dry cereal and a pat of butter. He asked about the strange combination and was told he was limited to 3 carbohydrates a day, each box of cereal counted as 1 carbohydrate, the pat of butter as the 3rd.

He did manage to get a piece of fruit and a cup of coffee from one of the nurses. Later that morning the head dietician came and apologized and reassured him they are getting a new food service provided.

"great" he said, "when?"

The dietician smiled "we hope in January" :wtf:

---but hold on DUER's it gets better

His breakfast arrives yesterday - he was served two pancakes with maple syrup and a can of coca-cola... (wasn't diet-coke - regular coke)

1. Holy shit! Pancakes and soda.
What's next - a pile of hashbrowns and a shot of tequila? Seven oranges, a piece of unbuttered toast, and a Red Bull?

Do they have a nutritionist working in the cafeteria at all?

:eyes:

supposedly, but Hey in January they hope to have a new food service vendor!!!!

I keep telling her brother that he needs to set up a website which rates/reviews all the hospitals on Long Island. He's been in and out of them for the past 2-3 years with his leg problems..

at another hospital he was in last year, he would only identify the meals by color. we'd ask him what he had for lunch/dinner and he would say "brown", "kinda green" or "I didn't know such a color even existed"

2. I guess both
hope they sorted out the diet for that guy. Gosh, hospital food isn't the best anyway, but someone definitely wasn't thinking straight.

4. I would suggest that what people really want in a hospital...
is competence. Warm food. IV started the first time. Lab drawn when it was supposed to be drawn. Timeliness. Elimination of the 90 minute limbo surrounding shift change in which NOTHING is done. What we get is advertising, remodeling, surveys, computerized everything. At some point health care is a personal, human experience. You cannot efficiency that out of the equation.

5. Nutrition in the hospital is a joke.
They serve mass-produced shit, heated in a microwave and sent to rooms at random.

When I was in the hospital, as a vegan, they had no clue what to feed me and kept sending me dairy stuff. I was finally able to get them to send me fruit, so I lived on that for two days.

6. I'd say it's time
for someone to bring in his meals. Are they trying to keep him there until January or something ... if he lives long enough on that diet? :wow:
