Someone ordered $500 worth of Banana Republic stuff on my debit card!!
Banana Republic called to verify $525 worth of purchases on my card. They caught it because it went to a different address. I've never ordered anything from Banana Republic!! I've canceled my card, so I hope this is all there is, but this makes me furious. I may stop buying anything in other than brick-and-mortar stores.

Now I wonder what other info of mine this thief may have!

1. They got my son for $1000 on his credit card....
He was only liable for the first $50. Two weeks later he got an envelope full of coupons from BR thanking him for his purchases!

2. They said they've canceled this order altogether,
and I'm not liable for any of it, because they hadn't shipped it. I just wonder if the card has been used any place else.

Sorry to hear about your son's problem. Yep, makes me furious!

3. A month or so ago
someone ordered a $2000 computer from Amazon on my credit card. (I fell for a phishing scheme. Yeah I'm embarrassed. I though I was smarter than that.) I caught it when UPS call me to make sure someone would be home to sign for it. All well that ends well. Amazon was great as was the credit card company. No cost to me at all. And I think that Amazon got their computer back.

4. They ordered it to be delivered to your home?
Not really a very smart thief. This order was being sent to a different address than mine. That's what caught Banana Republic's eye. I've never bought from Banana Republic before, but I'm feeling kinda beholden to 'em now.

7. No, it was to be delivered to a place in SoCal
I'm in NoCal. The thief didn't change phone numbers so UPS called my number. I knew I hadn't ordered anything from Amazon for a while so I went searching and found the order. Called Amazon and called the credit card company. They were able to stop the order, but I don't know if the guy got caught. There is a strong possibility he did since I notified the companies prior to delivery.

8. Oh, that makes more sense.
I'm hoping this person gets caught, too. I mean, Banana Republic has this other address, so maybe that'll help. Of course, with a debit card, the company or bank won't likely feel any compunction to go after 'em. It'll be on me. Which is why I'm calling the cops in the morning.

16. Yet another reason NOT to use debit cards.
Much better to use a credit card, and pay the balance in full each month...

17. My bank says that they will reimburse after the initial $50,
as if it were a credit card. Then they'll go after the SOB who stole THEIR money. They said this is the contract they have with cardholders, even though the law doesn't require this with debit cards.

I won't use a debit card online ever again. I may never buy anything online again!!

13. Actually, this just happened to me.
Yellow Transportation just called to see if someone would be available to receive my equipment. I've faxed them a letter telling them not to ship it.

Have also learned that my card was used at Old Navy. And several other charges that I didn't make. I've closed my bank account.

I wish these places would give me the address this was all being shipped to. I'd like to pay those folks a visit.

6. I've already canceled the card.
Don't know if they've used it elsewhere, though.

Why don't these dicks just get a fucking job?!! I mean it must take a lot of effort to do shit like this!!

Thanks for caring, btw.

Did you hear John Thomas got arrested today?

11. That's why I NEVER use my debit card online....
I have one credit card that I use for online purchases, and I keep the limit at $500. At any given time, I have $250 to $300 of purchases outstanding on it, so even if someone gets the number and successfully uses it there's a limit to the damage they can do.

As an aside, have you ever had to call a credit card company to tell them that you don't want your credit limit raised, and you'll cancel the card if they do so? I think it gets you put into their "freak" file! :freak:

14. OUCH
to put it mildly. Thank goodness, you caught it on time. Hope the rascals get
caught. We've been getting quite a few phishing type e mails recently. Have reported
them all to the fraud department of the companies they mentioned. Grandson designs
computer security software and says one can't be TOO careful. p

15. I'm sorry. That sucks.
Last year, right before Christmas someone rang up almost $5,000 on my credit card. The bank called me (obviously) because of the insane amount of charges in such a short period of time. They were really stupid because they shipped it all to their address too. I always buy through secure sites but I did give out my # to a charity over the phone a few weeks earlier and I wonder if that's how the info was grabbed.

The charge that actually made me laugh despite it all: over $800 at the Frederick's of Hollywood website.
