Can you recommend freeware/shareware for printing business cards?

2. my first thought wasn't software...have you tried Vistaprint?

i've had very good results from them, and there are loads of discounts that make the cost of business cards from them negligible.

i've never tried to do my own, so i can't really give you any help there.

3. what kind of cards do you want?

you can set up a merge document in word to handle an avery label (it's really a perforated sheet that has about 6 - 8 cards on it - they look like shit though) that is the size of a card.

however, most prepress people use some kind of graphics software to layout cards.

have you talked to your local printer? they usually can get you better quality and it doesn't really cost THAT much.

I've had reasonably good luck with Word and Avery, but only with text. This time around, we're hoping to add an image.

I might contact a printer--we don't need a ton of cards, but if the rates are reasonable it might be worthwhile.

6. Go to...

www.avery.com and play around there for a while. Then download DesignPro Limited which will do all sorts of great things. It can use every font you have in all sorts of twisty ways and allows you to import and scale graphics. It's the free, not the full, version but it will do almost everything you need.

When you buy the card stock for the business cards, make sure you get the "clean edge" kind that just kind of falls apart without leaving "chads" that look horribly amateurish. This stuff is cleaner, and a lot easier, than just using some 150 pound card stock and getting out the paper trimmer.

Word, Works, WordPerfect and some other word processors have built in label and card templates that you can use. I've used the one in Microsoft Works, and for some things it's even easier than Avery.
