My waitress was watching me eat today...it creeped me out.
So Sniffa and I went out for lunch this afternoon, and we decided to try a new place that was well-spoken of on Chowhound's Boston Area board. Having watched too many episodes of Kitchen Nightmares, we were immediately critiquing everything, amogst ourselves, like the decor, the place settings, the menu, of course.

But here's the weird thing. Our waitress was soooo overattentive, coming to the table every few minutes to check on us...At one point, I noticed her hovering over my left shoulder. I was eating fried Clam Strips. Ok, I'm weird. I eat them by stripping off most of the breading, and then eating the clam. She was watching me do this, and then immediately came around to my right side and asked me if something was wrong. She looked very concerned....

And later on, she asked us if we wanted to have the singular, half-eaten potato skin that was leftover wrapped up...

Yeah, it was a weird lunch. :P

:hi:

3. sniffa reviews: Lunch at grumpy whites
http://grumpywhites.com/menu/menu2.asp

the decor of the restaurant was off-putting, and immediateLy sent me into sneer mode. the styLe of the booths and the patterns on the waLLs were ugLy and green. however, throughout the restaurant there were beautifuL paintings... that compLeteLy cLashed with the waLL paper patterns.

we're seated right next to the kitchen, and i'm immediateLy questioning my decision to give this pLace a try (based on the raves over at chowhound) as i Look down at a paper pLace mat. that's never a good sign.

we started with an appetizer of potato skins. the skins were deep fried, and deLicious. however, the skins were topped with bacos. what kind of restaurant uses bacos instead of bacon. if anything, don't put anything on it if that's your onLy option.

for my meaL, i got the fried chicken, with mashed and gravy, and side of vegetabLe. the two breasts were fairLy Large, and they were breaded and fried, and tasted great with the gravy. the mashed potatoes were another story: a heaping, cLose encounters of the 3rd kind sized, serving of boxed mashed potatoes. i don't know how they can have any pride in their work for that. i can't remember ever getting boxed in a restaurant. the veggie was inedibLe. it was a dish of corn that wasn't warm, soggy, and not tasting Like corn. and corn? when i go to a restaurant, i want a reaL veggie with it. and that's just Lazy.

the prices seemed reasonabLe, but were overpriced for the crap that was served. and the restaurant was extremeLy popuLar with the eLderLy, so that shouLd give some cLue as to menu prices.

fried items are their bag, but the rest of the fare is bickford's quaLity.

7. Clam strips! Welcome to my ignore list.
Sheesh.

On the other hand, my SO ordered this weird appetizer plate of carne asada & french fries so maybe I should be more tolerant of you people who eat fried clams without bellies.

12. I noes. Clam strips are better than no clams.
:hi:

The carne asada plate worked oddly enough. It was like nachos on fries instead of chips. It's also one of those heart attack on a plate things so it's good that the little restaurant isn't near where we live.

9. The next time you go to Maine, go to Warrens Lobster House in Kittery
Their clam strips are to die for. And their haddock. And, so I've heard, the lobster except I don't like it.
