I saw Nosferatu last night with a live band doing the score.
And it was damned amazing. The music was done by a small group called the Devil's Music Ensemble, and they were unreal. It was way better than just the movie itself, which is great to start with. The music fit to perfection. If anyone gets a chance to see something like this I highly recommend it, especially those of you in the Boston area like me.A one of a kind evening.(It was also great to see such a clear print of the movie for once, too.)

Here's a video from Nosferatu with DME's music. The vid doesn't do the live setting justice, but it'll give you an idea of what I saw. :)

We saw it a few Halloweens ago with a organist and that was pretty kickass, but strings... hard to go wrong with strings for a really frenetic mood. :)

2. It was one of the coolest things I've ever seen.
My friends and I had a chance to see the same movie with a live orchestra about 20 years and didn't end up going. So we had been kicking ourselves in the ass ever since. When this chance came up we made sure we didn't miss it.And I'm so glad we did, because I was blown away.

The coolest sound effect was the violinist dragging the bow across the edge of a cymbal.Worked perfectly for that "scary" feel.

4. We have a theater doing Phantom of the Opera with pipe organ
the original silent version of the film, not the Lloyd Weber piece of crap.

5. I bet that's pretty cool, too.
I guess the group I saw does other movies as well, like Jeckyll and Hyde and the Cabinet of Dr Caligari.I'd love to see those as well.

6. I'd forgotten how much I love the sound of the violin because I hadn't played for a while...
I finally picked up my violin a few weeks ago for the first time in a few years... god damn I didn't realize how much I missed it.

Oh, and there are only two words to describe this video so far... Bad and Ass. Together. They don't work properly apart. :)

9. The video doesn't even do it justice.
It was amazing live.

The violin is a great instrument.I hear it more and more in the whacked shit I listen to, and when done right it fits right in.Watching the guy play last night was a treat, that's for sure.

7. If you like that kind of thing, see if Guy Maddin's "Brand Upon The Brain" is being shown near you

10. Maddin's films are great.
Sadly, it will never come anywhere near me, so I will never have the full experience.
