I'm not a fan of the DLC in any way, but I also have to confess that by local standards I have been defined as a "BAD Democrat" (it is rather like being a bad dog, I suspect...) I do not meet their moral purity standards, it would seem.

My association with local Labor and my open postings on a local GOP dominated political blog have rendered me unfit for membership in the local liberal cadre, I guess. (The GOP knows who I am and they see me as a Dem--so go figure!) Oh--and did I remember to mention my local work for other BAD Dems like the State's Attorney and specific County Board members? Yeah, THAT is a problem too...

Anyhow, I will offer up my observation from the ranks of the disenfranchised that just showing up is no longer enough to qualify anyone as a Dem, it would seem. Whatever party anyone self IDs is not a factor in today's climate.

Sorry, Lisa, I know you were pointing out something unusual rather than offering comment on their politics, but I gotta tell you the moral purity stuff I'm seeing in the Dem party as a whole is creeping me out big time. I have busted my ass for years for social justice issues and now my credibility is in question because a handful of idiots has taken exception to what I'm out there talking about.

DU is about as left as it gets, and it is self selecting. I choose to come here and I choose to be active. I honestly think the Dem party is gonna self destruct unless we stop eating our young.

And I'm probably not pure in the eyes of some Dems, either (ask me what I think of our governor, for example). But I can't imagine your credentials being questioned!! You and Kevsand are about as progressive as anyone I know!! Sorry if someone has said otherwise (let me at 'em!!).

And, yeah, I was mostly commenting on the (absolutely predictable) reaction to a DLC'er in GD-P. Sorry if my post was read in some other manner.

Btw, my dad is a member of the DLC...and anything but a Repug. So, I kinda get it.

26. We have a Dem party chair that is an idiot and a lazy little turd.

Sorry, but I'm being blunt. He also happens to have an issue with Kev and with me that is rooted in our outspokenness and organizing activities over the last couple of years.

I stood up and spoke out about a Dem appointment that was abusing his female employees, myself included. I went to several Dem County Board members with it and they did nothing. They did not ONE damn thing about the problem. When I stood publicly along with the other women he had abused, I became a pariah for daring to speak out and for working with AFSCME and their members to focus public attention on what was happening.

I continued to speak out when those same Dems I had spoken to a year before continued to protect that man. They began claiming he was being "politically persecuted" by (get this!) a local GOP conspiracy. I was not only ignored, but every value that I thought I shared with those people was completely trampled. I watched them protect an abuser of women and it made me ill.

When I stood up, it was my husband and the local Labor community that stood with me. The local NOW organization and many of the self professed progressives in Urbana were no place to be seen when I was out there putting my ass on a line. It cost us some status, some false friends, and I almost my job. Kev and I will "pay" for it for as long as the Dem party chair can hold his grip on the reins, and that is why I am just a bit strange about litmus tests for Dem party membership these days.

I am a Democrat, but I am not like the ones who control our local party.

It has been pretty damn weird down here for a while.

And you just know I want names and details :) Really, who is the county chair these days? Where were you working when you lost your job? Did you get any support from the Suite 208 people? Feel free to pm me, if you want.

It does sound like it's weird down there these days. And I suppose I know people on both sides of the controversy. So, it's just as well I'm not down there. Our local county org is pretty in-bred, but they do invite me to things from time to time. Nothing is publicized in the paper or wherever, so you gotta get invited. Still, they asked me to say the invocation at the Jefferson-Jackson Dinner last spring. And since no other clergy is likely to agree to do it--at least none that I know--I'll probably be asked again next spring.

And I'll certainly volunteer for the campaign of whoever's running against Jerry Weller.

Btw, did you know Nancy G's dad is a county board member up here? It is a small world.
