If you have ever held a baseball bat in your hands

It's such a great game.

This is just a post saying thanks to all the kids now playing and keeping the love alive, and to all those kids who grew up and continued playing.

Hit a pitch, make it to first base, and you will forever be hooked on this game!

1. I fell in love when I learned about all the different pitches

It was like being a superhero/ninja and you had all these different weapons that you could use to attack the batter.

I love that one on one confrontation between pitcher and batter. It's very unique.

2. weird little league story

I was the first baseman. The mayor's son was the star pitcher. We won the state championship in our little division that year. Prior to that happening, the mayor's son went nuts and took a dump in the girls shower. He was sent away, and they made me the pitcher. I wasn't that good, but damn, that was fun.

But I bet someone like Curt Schilling could get away with it.

5. The first time I heard the crack of the bat at a big league game I knew I was hooked.

When I scored my first-ever run in YMCA league baseball when I was 10, I remember crossing home plate and stepping as hard as I could. It was an amazing sensation, and I STILL remember it to this day.

10. Mom used to bitch to dad

back in my heyday that I should get some damn job instead of playing baseball during the summer.
This lasted up through legion ball (i.e., 18 y/o).

Dad said(I overheard(eavesdropped)): "He'll have the rest of his life to work."

As much as I ache now at 43, I wonder how dad was able to throw me some BP and catch my fastball and curve at 50+. Probably because he didn't have the opportunity that he gave me.

But anyway, before I get maudlin, baseball season was over in late June.

is revolting. I've explained to Mrs R so many times that yes, the batters know when they've hit a strong one just from the sound of the bat.

to die because of the velocity a college hitter can put on a ball with a metal bat.

NY City is going to require HS teams to only use wood bats and NY State may also pass a law requiring them.

I liked baseball better.......

and yes, no matter what level you're playing, once you've hit the ball, or fired one to first and it made that real sweet pop in the mitt and you got the runner out or you pitched your way out of a jam, you'll always love baseball. I like A league ball myself, and the Nationals.....

21. I played second base in Little League,

using my grandfather's glove. He died playing baseball when he was in his early forties - a lunchtime game with his co-workers. He was an airplane mechanic. I never knew him.

But one day I was playing, and it was that crucial point in the game: a close score, the bases loded for the other guys. Their biggest, meanest pituitary case of a hitter came up to bat. He popped it up right into the sun. I went down on my haunches and held the glove out on my lap. I closed my eyes, and the only thought I remember was the wish not to get beaned in the head. I heard a soft 'plop.' I opened my eyes, and the ball was in my glove - my grandfather's glove. Thank god I didn't have to throw it anywhere! I was too stunned. But we won the game.

22. My dear Perseid...

I remember, back in the sixth grade, playing softball with my friends...

I believe we played with the boys as well...

And every now and then, this little, shy, unathletic girl would be magical, and hit a home run...

My friend Donny would walk home with me, and he would say..."Somebody hit a home run today..."

And I would blush...

That was a very long time ago...

But I have never forgotten that thrill...

The sound, and feel, of the bat against the ball...
