1. All I can say....
is that I think #3 is a Cessna and #4 is a Beechcraft.

My dad had one of these when I was a kid:

Unfortunately, it was destroyed in a hurricane when someone neglected to have it hangared.

4. What a shame it was destroyed :(
I remember riding in a Chief when I was a kid. Dad liked the Champ better, probably because it had sticks instead of control wheels. Lots of fun.

8. He had a Champ before I was born....
Alas I never got to ride with him- Mom was a bit on the over-protective side... And after the Chief was destroyed he never bought another as his heart condition would have probably caused him to fail the medicals anyway (though he's now 74 and still going strong....)

I've considered taking the ground classes just for giggles, but I know I'd be completely absorbed and want to get full-on into aviation- I guess it's in my blood....

12. I grew up
in light aircraft, my Dad always had one. When he got old his heart got bad and he lost his medical too. His friends would always take him out and let him fly theirs with them from time to time. He never lost his touch, right up until a few months of when he passed.

10. That's a very close answer
The aircraft in the pic is another biplane made to fill the military, specfically, the US Navy's primary trainer requirements. It looks very much like a Stearman, but it is a completely different airplane made by a different company.

14. yeah, I think
I might have gotten a bit too esoteric, with that one especially.

Numbers 3 and 4 are light aircraft that were all over general aviation airfields when I was a kid in the 70s. Especially, no. 3, Dad had one of those.

31. It was still fun
I worked around a PT-17, literally around one as it was in pieces. My boss, a physical engineer, had one in pieces and was in the process of rebuilding it to include the bigger radial engine. The Wings and tail were re-skinned(?) and certified by his father, who learned the skill during WWII, but went on to become a test pilot by the end of the war. He said it was to be the last set his father would ever do, which I thought was kinda neat; closure. The wings hung on the wall along with the tail sections. The fuselage was on her wheels and I had to keep moving her around the bay as I set out my work. Oh, and the boxes of bits and pieces, there were tons of them; some new, some reworked and certified, and some junker old parts. I had fun pouring over the stuff and guessing where each piece would go on the plane. My guesses got pretty good after awhile.

41. outstanding
I did the same thing more or less with my Dad when he bought the Stearman sprayer he had. It had been flipped over in a ground accident and damaged the upper wings, prop and tail. we rebuilt and recovered the upper wings, which involved a lot of wood work on the ribs and hundreds of stitches to rib stitch the cloth to the wings. Then re assembly. It was a lot of fun working with Dad on that old plane.

45. now this is cool
I did a search for the "N" number of Dad's old Stearman. Found these pics, it appears the current owner has restored it from a shaggy looking old crop duster back to pristine original condition. This is the very airplane Dad and I worked all those hours on. Too cool :)

47. yes
yes, it's an original type engine, 220hp Continental 7 cyl radial with a fixed pitch wood prop. The quickest way to tell is how far out the engine sits in front. When they converted them to 450hp Pratt & Whitneys. they had to use a shorter engine mount to move the engine back for weight and balance.

From what I can see, someone did a fine restoration on the old bird

19. Ok Number 3 is obviously out of the bag
Since we have 2 positive IDs in the thread, Yes, number 3 is a Cessna 140. The other perfectly acceptable answer would have been Cessna 120. If you have a 120 with the optional rear windows behind the cokpit door, the two are virtually indistinguishable just by looking at a picture.

25. If I'm not mistaken
The rear windows were an option you could order. I think more 120's probably got their rear windows from field mods than anything. The other differences were the 120 didn't come stock with an electrical system or flaps if I recall correctly.

Globe swift, Ercoupe ("Take a drive in the sky!"), 140, Luscombe 8a (had a stick, not a wheel).

Had a Luscombe 8a, cool plane.

Dad went through one ever so often, he'd trade for another one. Here's a few he had:

Piper Pacer:

'57 Cessna 172

A 450hp Stearman modified for crop dusting

And a Bellanca Super Viking.....gets you there real fast

Always thought the Navion was cool. My dad would work Saturdays at the local Mooney dealer in exchange for hanger space. So we had some considerable Mooney time, too, just didn't own one.

43. At first I thought no. 1 was an F-8F
But that particular 'cat had more of a barrel-like fuselage and the vertical stabilizer was more squared. Mainly, though, it didn't have a five-blade prop.

Only other type I can think of is a Hawker — one of the Fury series.

No. 4 is a Beech Staggerwing.
