It seems like you're just laying fabric down that will start absorbing all the nastiness and preserving it there until you rip the carpet up again.
That sounds over-dramatic but to me carpet's gross :puke:
Part of our house has hideous brown shag, the exact same color as partly-digested cat barf, and we want to rip it up but the floor underneath is in such bad shape we have to wait til me plan what to do with it and how we're gonna pay for that.
