1. deep dish, thick crust pizza sits in my tummy like a brick
I used to like it, but now prefer a thin crust... I just digest it better.

I'm probably getting old.

2. Chicago, of course
Because even Chicago thin crust pizza is better than New York pizza!

32. I second the Gino's suggestion.

Very good stuff and it is the classic Chicago deep dish stuffed pizza. We took Material Girl to Gino's (it has gotta be Gino's East!) for pizza a couple of years ago and even she loved it. You can order from them and have it shipped. I threaten it sometimes but have never done it:

Hubby loves Aurelio's Pizza and says it has a better variety than Gino's. Dunno--can't say for sure because I go to Gino's when I am in Chicago!

17. Edwardo's or Giordano's - order the stuffed pizza.
Oh, man, I'm sitting here drooling just thinking about it (and WAY too far away in OKC)

26. damenzo's on taylor/western
or villa nova in berwyn.

freddy's on 31/union is good too.

avoid gino's east/giordano's - overpriced, caters to the tourist trade. not that good.

6. Depends on the mood
NY Pizza is excellent, especially if it's on crust as crispy as a matzo cracker. Goes great with Pale Ales.

CHI Pizza is excellent as well, and whole wheat dough (don't laugh) tastes really really good when you do it. Especially if you use some beer in the dough. Goes best with a dark beer.

That stuff is absolute crap.

25. I must say that Papa Johns has the best chain pizza,
my family had a pizza restaurant for a couple of years so I am a snob :). While not near as good as what we made, it is still my favorite of the chains out there.

9. Detroit style
Where a thick crust is still not too thick, and Buddy's rules supreme!

Although Louis di Prima's in Hazel Park is very good, too.

21. Yeah, my best childhood pizza memories are from a mom and
pop Italian restaurant in Detroit. The crust was on the thin side and flexible. The cheese was nice and oily and stretchy.

I guess NY-style is the closest to it. 'Not a fan of Chicago-style because of the thick, doughy crust.

Mr. Z. makes high-brow, chi-chi pizza, which is tasty, but a different species from those hot, sloppy wedges of goodness. :)

15. Completely different food items, IMO.
There's a local NY style pizza place that serves up fantastic stuff. So that's where I go most of the time. It's much closer to traditional pizza, IMO, and delicious.

That said, chicago style pizza is like a meat pie, using italian meats, spices, and sauce. They're a completely different beast so you can't compare them directly. They can be just as delicious.

I'm still reeling from the shock of encountering what I will charitably call attempts at pizza in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Dayton, Ohio.
