I said to him, "Are you nuts, what happens if I fall off that fecking roof and kill myself?" He stood there with a stupid look on his face.

This exchange happened just last week.

Former Green Bay Packers receiver Max McGee dies in fall from roof

MINNEAPOLIS - Max McGee, the unexpected hero of the first Super Bowl and a long-time challenge for Hall of Fame coach Vince Lombardi, died Saturday after falling from the roof of his home, police confirmed. He was 75.

Police were called to the former Green Bay receiver's Deephaven home around 5:20 p.m., Sgt. Chris Whiteside said. Efforts to resuscitate McGee were unsuccessful.

McGee was blowing leaves off the roof when he fell, according to news reports. A phone message left at a number listed for an M. McGee wasn't immediately returned.

"I just lost my best friend," former teammate Paul Hornung told the St. Paul Pioneer Press. "(His wife) Denise was away from the house. She'd warned him not to get up there. He shouldn't have been up there. He knew better than that."

1. Well, if you have a leaf blower...
Put it up to his ear and see if his brain comes out the other ear.

Sheesh!!!!!! :silly:

To quote Bugs Bunny, "Whatta maroon!!"

2. That's the method I use to clean my gutters and roof
Edited on Mon Oct-22-07 02:02 PM by Greyskye
Of course, I'm not 75 years old yet either. I'd rather be walking around blowing crud out of the gutters then either schlepping the ladder around the part of the house that it will reach, or kneeling on the roof scrubbing out the gutters by hand where it doesn't.

Guess I'm another goofy neighbor.

9. Its a gutter clean out kit from Sears that hooks to your leaf blower
Takes me about ten minutes to clean all my gutters. Best 40 bucks I ever spent.

The neighbor I spoke of in my OP has already been over to borrow it.

6. Do they make those for two-story houses???
That'd be exactly what I need!! I'm not getting up on the roof; I have this "thing" about heights.

10. It comes with enough (4) extensions to reach 10 feet
Edited on Mon Oct-22-07 03:06 PM by NNN0LHI
I don't need one of the 2 and 1/2 foot extensions to do my one-story. And I am pretty sure more extensions could be purchased separately. I don't know how unwieldy the gizmo would get for two-stories? Took a little while to get used to one-story but it got easier the more I operated it. I would think it could be used for two-stories.

5. Had friend who fell off ladder doing that, lived, but....
never walked again. Broke both heels, could not be successfully repaired, then infected, etc. I make it practice to NEVER clean my gutters.

12. It ruins your roof too
Once all those little round balls that are attached to your shingles get knocked off from walking on them and end up in the gutter the roof is no longer viable. And roofs are damn expensive to tear off and replace.

I stay off mine at all costs.

13. However...
...if you don't clean sticks and leaves off of your roof, that can also cause roof damage. I've got oaks and pine trees over my house, and if I don't clean up all the stuff that falls all year round, it will cause the roof to fail a lot faster then walking over it once in a while does. Moss starts to grow, and dry rot starts soon after.

14. You are right
I had to remove several trees that were hanging over the house. The last owner planted some fast growing very dirty trees about four feet from the foundation. By the time I finished trimming the branches off the roof I had a half a tree which looked like hell so I took them down and planted some others farther from the house. They should be good and mature and providing plenty of shade about the time I am pushing up daisies.

Home ownership is fun isn't it? Sometimes I wish I were renting.

15. home ownership
No kidding. I currently need a new roof, new deck, new driveway, new retaining wall next to the driveway. And one car just died so replacing that just got pushed up in the queue. Sigh.

Oh, and when all that is done; kitchen remodel, new carpeting, new paint...

Sheesh. Now I just wanna go and
