Dear Jackson Browne.
Edited on Mon Oct-22-07 01:43 PM by Sugar Smack
If I heard a guy speaking to his friends when he thought no one else was around, and he said, "I've got to be somebody's babe, I must be somebody's babe, I've got to be somebody's babe, cause I'm so fine", I wouldn't want to write an entire song about that person. I'd just go to biology lab & be done with it.

Love,
Steffi

2. Really!
Honey, I heard it the other day & I thought, "What's wrong with that girl?" I've got to be somebody's babe? Cause I'm so fine? WTF is up with that? There's nothing wrong with a healthy ego, but I'm not ABOUT to stand around with my friends and say, "I've GOT to be somebody's babe, cause I'm so fine"

20. According to "Behind the Music: Jackson Browne's Search for Hipness"
"The Laurel Canyon scene in the late 70s was a mere shadow of its former self: John and Michelle, Denny and Cass, John Sebastian, Brian Wilson, Graham Nash - all gone. The only remnant of those glory days was a hermit like figure, huddled in a drainage culvert just below Mulholland Drive....

On certain nights, a passer-by might see a dim glow from the depths of the pipe - a flickering incandescence that indicated a presence - a presence of genius.

But that turned out to be Brian Wilson. Jackson Browne at that time was living in comfort in a large house at the top of the canyon - a house where he strove for the relevance he thought was rightly his. To this end, he worked, as a fine craftsman does, honing his art to a finely tuned piece: "I've got to be somebody's.... what? Caramel sundae without nuts? Too saccarhine. Somebody's.......Tommy Burger with extra chili and no onions? No one would get the symbolism. Somebody's......babe? Could it be? Babe? That simple, basic, elementary particle of the soft rock anthem? Yes. YES! Babe! Babe it is!! And they will celebrate this song for time immemorial!!!1!!1"

Next on "Behind the Music": Reality sets in for Mr Browne.

17. aw, but some of his songs are so much better than that
I have to say I really like "The Naked Ride Home," one I hadn't heard before.

I think he's capable of being a good writer when he wants to.

I can't help it, he had me from the first time i heard "Take it Easy" on the radio.

21. Yeah he wrote it -
I like his version the best.

Well, I'm runnin down the road, tryin to loosen my load, got 7 women on my mind.
four who wanna own me, two who wanna stone me, one says she's a friend of mine.
Take it easy, take it easy, don't let the sound of your own wheels drive you crazy"

and
"there's a girl my lord in a flatbed ford, slowing down to take a look at me."

I think his songs have held up pretty well, actually. I still like them, and I can't say that about everything I listened to in the 70s.

22. Well, he wrote that song for the soundtrack of "Fast Times at Ridgemont High"...
...so I think it designed to accompany the storyline of the girl who was, as someone here put it, "boy-crazy."
