Son of a... (part two)
Edited on Tue Oct-23-07 09:03 AM by DarkTirade
Okay, so for those who missed the earlier posts, I need to move across the country rather suddenly to help out my grandparents, grandpa just had some surgery, needs help getting around ect. ect.

So I tried to see if I could transfer my job to one of the warehouse/hubs up there... no dice. Then, right as I was about to turn in my 2 weeks notice, I'm told that there's a family medical emergency leave thingy I could apply for. That way if I ever come back, or if I start going to school up there, I'll be able to start work/transfer up there without losing my seniority, pay raises, health insurance, ect. So I started following that lead. And I kept getting the run-around. And wrong phone numbers. And wrong email addresses. And just generally getting jerked around.

So finally, after almost a week of that, I get through to the person I need to get through to. And I find out... nope. Apparently I'm NOT eligible for it. Not only do you have to have worked there for 3 years (I'm at 2 years, 10 1/2 months right now) but it's only for immediate family. Spouses, parents and children. No grandkids, and no grandparents. WTF. I mean seriously. WTF. All I'm trying to do is see if I can keep my job available for if and when I come back. Do they realize how much they SAVE by letting me come back? All that money they spend training somebody new... they won't have to if they let me come back. And I'll be a helluva better worker than somebody new, because I've spent years doing that job. Grrrr.

So now I'll have to turn in my 2 weeks notice... a week later than I wanted to. All this trouble, all this shit I had to wade through... not only was it for nothing, but it's actually managed to set me BACK.

And then, just to be even more annoying...

Well, let me start at the beginning of this little tale. I've been working the night shift for almost three years. That's three years that I've barely had the free time to go out and have fun. To meet people. To hang out with people I already know. Because I'm awake when they're asleep and vice versa. I have profiles on a couple dating/networking sites, just to try and see if that can help make up for that. And now, right now, when I'm about to leave the state, I finally get a bite on one of them. From somebody who seems rather cool and interesting. Who I'll probably never have a chance to meet, because I'm leaving. D'oh.

Oh yeah, and just out of curiosity, I looked up the 'town' I'm moving to online. The 'town' I grew up in until my parents moved down to Florida...

turns out I've been LIED to. It's not a town. It's a VILLAGE!

1. A village?
I do hope you'll be spared their idiot.

You are going a kind and wonderful thing. I can't believe that a decision and move of that sort won't hold everything good for you.

Chances are that your current employer would rehire you anyway were you to return. It sucks to lose all the seniority though. Damned corporate america.

Happy packing and, really, what a good thing you're doing. Are you looking forward to this or is it feeling like more of a chore?

2. I know there will be some chore-ness to it
but honestly, I've been looking for just about any excuse I can use to get out of this swamp of a state. :)

Besides, I've been in a rut for a long time. Wouldn't hurt to break out of it in every sense of the word.

3. Well then
I'd expect this move will be the thing you look back on later in life and say "oh MAN am I glad that happened!"

Adventures and a whole new frontier. How cool.

4. Or rather, a frontier that I haven't seen since I was 8 or so. :)
Actually I went back once to visit, but that was only a few years later. And my grandparents have completely redone their entire house, so I think the only thing I'll recognize will be the barn. :)

6. The worst part is... I grew up there. I thought I grew up in a small town.
Turns out I was wrong. :(
