has anyone taken a speed reading course?

Do they work? Or are these a scam? I always have so much to read and little time. Wouldn't mind reading faster..

1. I took Rapid Reading in high school.

It didn't help me too much. We were mostly taught us to focus on the major words of the sentence and to skip over articles. The rest of the class was timed reading.

2. I tried this speed reading course and it worked great...

Donald Rumsfeld is giving the President his daily briefing. He concludes by saying: "Yesterday, three Brazilian soldiers were killed."

"OH NO!" the President exclaims. "That's terrible!"

His staff sits stunned at this display of emotion, nervously watching as the President sits, head in hands.

Finally, the President looks up and asks, "How many is a brazillion?"

It's almost as if I knew what the next word was going to be before I even got to it!
