Charles Laughton....
From the notoriously uncontrolled Henry VII in 1933 to his last role as a smarmy southern Senator in the classic political thriller, Advise and Consent, Laughton gave life to some of the most unforgettable characters on screen...

I just watch Rembrandt on TCM and I was amazed at how he delicately, like a brush stroke, breathed life into a centuries old artist...

He's a master and I would suggest watching any movie he is in if you have the chance...

My dad had a spoken word album from 1960 in which the actor read snippets of literature from Shakespeare to Jack Kerouac...

Here is a clip from the 1939 version of the Hunchback of Notre Dame just to get an idea of how good an actor he was...

1. He was an amazing actor...
Such depth in this poignant clip.

I've seen him perform before, but not in a very long time...

Thank you, Chris, for this beautiful reminder...

I don't think anyone approaches his abilities, esp. these days.

There just isn't the emphasis on acting now...

3. Excellent in everything he ever did.

I particularly enjoyed him in Witness for the Prosecution, but he was superb in everything. Spartacus was another particular favorite.

4. Didn't he play Knute Rockne in
the Hunchback of Notre Dame?

...or was it the halfback of Notre Dame ... I can never remember.

6. He was brilliant
Mutiny on the Bounty would not have been as good
if he was not Capt. Bligh

9. And he directed one movie...
...and it was The Night of the Hunter. :scared: Laughton never got to see what a classic he made and how much audiences would love it for years to come.

10. Glad you mentioned it. That's one hell of a movie.
That scene where the kids see the preacher's shadow in their room at night still gives me chills. And that's just REMEMBERING that scene.

14. Yeah, I'm glad I didn't see that when I was a kid.
I remember To Kill a Mockingbird scared us when we were kids because it was something that could happen in real life. The Night of the Hunter has that kind of power and is, if anything, infinitely more eerie.

11. One of my favorites was his portrayal of Inspector Javert in Les Misérables
He always had that sneer on his face

15. He was great in Spartacus too.
The kind of senator we could use now - except of course he ends up knifing himself in the hot tub.
