Not a Red Sox fan, but I hope the Rockies lose.
Most of their upper management are fundys, and they are "thanking Jesus," naturally. :eyes:

1. Which teams don't thank some religious figure?
Seems like it'd be kinda hard to find one that doesn't.

2. The Rockies bigwigs are taking it to the absurd.
As in over-the-top.

all that much attention to sports. :)

4. I am a Red Sox fan, and I'd like the Red Sox to win, but
I'd like for everyone to stop looking for reasons to hope "the other team" (which ever one it is) loses.

Pick a team and cheer them on. There will be good and bad to both teams. So what.

It's a GAME! It's supposed to be FUN!

Oh, and he also wants Archae to get a painful groinal injury.

6. As I said when someone else brought this up, if I let politics infect everything I did...
I'd go crazy.

I'm cheering for the Rockies because I used to live in Colorado, went to a few of their games and took a liking to them.

7. I was going to jump on this yesterday
I was wiki'ing the Rockies to determine whether they came into existence last Tuesday or last Wednesday :-) when I ran across this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colorado_Rockies#2006_Controversy_over_Christian_rules

On June 1, 2006, USA Today reported that Rockies management, including manager Clint Hurdle, had instituted an explicitly Christian code of conduct for the team's players, banning men's magazines (such as Maxim and Playboy) and sexually explicit music from the team's clubhouse. The newspaper reported:

Behind the scenes, (the Rockies) quietly have become an organization guided by Christianity — open to other religious beliefs but embracing a Christian-based code of conduct they believe will bring them focus and success.
From ownership on down, it's an approach the Rockies are proud of — and something they are wary about publicizing. "We're nervous, to be honest with you," Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd says. "It's the first time we ever talked about these issues publicly. The last thing we want to do is offend anyone because of our beliefs."
The article sparked controversy, including criticism in a column in The Nation, which stated:

San Francisco Giants first baseman-outfielder Mark Sweeney, who spent 2003 and 2004 with the Rockies, said, "You wonder if some people are going along with it just to keep their jobs. Look, I pray every day. I have faith. It's always been part of my life. But I don't want something forced on me. Do they really have to check to see whether I have a Playboy in my locker?"

Yeesh. :scared: On the other hand, some other Rockies players deny this:

Soon after the USA Today article appeared, The Denver Post published an article featuring many Rockies players contesting the claims made in the USA Today article.<7> Jason Jennings, a Rockies' pitcher, said:

"(The article in USA Today) was just bad. I am not happy at all. Some of the best teammates I have ever had are the furthest thing from Christian," pitcher Jason Jennings said. "You don't have to be a Christian to have good character. They can be separate. (The article) was misleading."
While the initial USA Today article caused some controversy, the main claims have been repudiated by the ballclub and its players in the subsequent Denver Post story.

"You don't have to be a Christian to have good character"?! Why does Jason Jennings hate America so much? :sarcasm:

While the evidence is inconclusive, you might as well root for the Sox anyway, just to be on the safe side. :-)

9. I call BS! That wiki entry is totally inaccurate!
Edited on Wed Oct-24-07 03:26 PM by pinniped
Mark Sweeney is not on the Giants anymore. He got picked up by the hated Dodgers, a team that likes to take in unwanted Giants players.

That said, my money will be on Boston.

You should watch the 2007 World Series of Poker. At the same time, two guys were asking for the Lord's help on an all-in call. The commentator said he didn't know which guy Jesus was listening to.

10. Oddly enough, Sweeney's own Wiki entry reflects this
happened in August.

Now I know why my fave blogger has a blanket ban on citing Wiki. :-)

14. I would say that issue has been debunked
In any case it hasn't generated any traction in Colorado. People don't see them as a Christian team, nor do they play to that image. I think they tried one of those "faith nights", which is as good a way as any to get people to buy tickets, but didn't repeat the effort. Whatever that was, it's all in the past.

11. They are giving part of their playoff share to the family of the first base coach that died
I'm sorry, but that kind of trumps anything.

Also, Curt Schilling is a Bush loving POS.

13. He also said getting Bush re-elected was more important than winning the '04 Series
And whined and cried about Kerry supporters from Massachusetts attacking him.

Screw him.

I would too if I supported politicians who have proven they couldn't give a rat's ass about health care and medical research.

15. The Rockies sound like the Indianapolis Colts of baseball.
The Colts with that fundie coach of theirs and the owner. :puke:

I didn't care who won the Super Bowl, but I was kinda rooting for Chicago just for that reason alone.

16. Well, I think most teams have their share of fundys, jerks, wife beaters, generous people, atheists,
jokesters, sour pusses, double jointed people, people who hum, etc..individuals that are all different in some way...much like the folks all around you....people

The Rockies Pitch Religion
Dave Zirin

In Colorado, there stands a holy shrine called Coors Field. On this site, named for the holiest of beers, a team plays that has been chosen by Jesus Christ himself to play .500 baseball in the National League West. And if you don't believe me, just ask the manager, the general manager and the team's owner.

In a remarkable article from Wednesday's USA Today, the Colorado Rockies went public with the news that the organization has been explicitly looking for players with "character." And according to the Tribe of Coors, "character" means accepting Jesus Christ as your personal lord and savior. "We're nervous, to be honest with you," Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd said. "It's the first time we ever talked about these issues publicly. The last thing we want to do is offend anyone because of our beliefs." When people are nervous that they will offend you with their beliefs, it's usually because their beliefs are offensive.

As Rockies chairman and CEO Charlie Monfort said, "We had to go to hell and back to know where the Holy Grail is. We went through a tough time and took a lot of arrows."
