Home birth
Curious how many DUers have had their babies at home with or w/o a midwife?

6. Well, absent an angelic announcement or mafia-style fedex conception,
there's no immediate danger of that anyhow.

8. I'm not sure where you got that idea.
Edited on Thu Oct-25-07 02:24 PM by LeftyMom
I'm definitely pro-homebirth, but largely because of LK's hospital birth.

Oh, I did have a midwife, that might be what made you think I did it at home. I had my prenatals with a CNM. She wasn't all that great. I delivered at a huge teaching hospital, what with the month late thing and all.

5. I'd be hesitant because mine were both breech
and #2 had her cord wrapped around her neck but I think it's really cool to do that at home. Was just reading on another web site about how gross childbirth is and people who refused to touch their babies until they were washed up. I held mine when they were slimy and it was beautiful as hell. People are so immature sometimes.

11. Both are usually managable at home
but if I lived someplace where an expeditious transfer wasn't possible in an emergency I'd look into other options.

7. was scheduled to but ended up at the hospital
but still used my midwife.

No complications - just got really nervous since I lived far from a hospital and changed my mind at the last minute.

16. I have GIGANTIC babies so i have had all mine at hosp.
Edited on Thu Oct-25-07 06:25 PM by FedUpWithIt All
This time i am also high risk. We also just found out i have gestational diabetes again so we may even be forced to leave our midwife and head off to OB. :(

I was hoping for a relaxed hosp birth. I wanted "Daddy" to catch the baby and for my older girls to attend.

20. My oldest was my smallest...
she was 8lbs12oz 19in. My middle daughter was nearly a week late (no gestational diabetes) and she was 9lbs10oz and 22inches. My youngest was 9lbs and 21.5 in at a two week early induction.

The boy i am carrying now is measuring bigger than he should be for conception date but it is still fairly early so that doesn't really mean anything. I did fail my three hour glucose tolerance test the other day though so...

22. I feel for you
I'm sorry that my mother had to deal with me. I was a little big, ~10 lbs. and one month premature :P

Let alone my mother almost miscarried right before 3 months and had to be bed ridden for a few months, had to have blood products that could've given her AIDS at the time, and also she had heart problems from her medications.

25. One doesn't preclude the other.
I always went diabetic, too...but all my deliveries were fairly relaxed -- not much to it. Last one was with a midwife...middle one, the doctor barely got there in time to catch her (literally...didn't even get a gown -- just a mask on the fly).

29. My ncm is not able to continue caring for me if insulin is needed...
otherwise we are staying where we are. I just hope that if we do have to make the OB move that they will continue to allow my children to be there and even that they will let my partner catch the baby. Some OBs are very bothered by these requests.

17. I wanted to, but my husband was too nervous.
I didn't want it to be a bad time for him, so we went to the hospital. I would have had to in the end, anyway, since my son was all topsy twisty inside.

21. In retrospect I could've done it at home
I gained nothing in particular by being at the hospital except uncomfortable beds, lousy food, and Ilsa, She-Wolf of the Pediatric Rounds.

On the other hand, I would've scared the crap outta the neighbors with all my howling, probably gotten the cops called on me too.

Edited on Fri Oct-26-07 12:37 PM by supernova
I'd have to be in the hospital because I'd be high risk due to my heart condition.

Though, I could probably get by with a mid-wife and attending MD in the background.

edit: Home birth sounds romantic, but I personally wouldn't risk it.

Big baby, easy birth. There was a side effect, though--he grew up to become a hippy.
