Your favorite 80's era Metal Band
And this isn't a poll, since there were so damn many.

For the uninformed: Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motley Crue, Ratt, Poison, Whitesnake - are real metal bands

Warrant, Ugly Kid Joe, Cinderella or Europe are not. Ballad bands are not metal bands.

Speed or Thrash Metal, being a totally different kind of music than Metal.

17. I'd call Motorhead quintessentially speed metal.
Lemmy practically invented the genre. They were doing that whole double-bass-drum and shredding guitars thing when the rest of the world was dancing to disco.

68. I'd say, neither.
They're not metal, they're rock'n'roll--harder, louder and faster, but still just rock'n'roll. And I think they'd say the same thing, that they play rock'n'roll. When I interviewed and wrote and article about them, twice actually, I think I said they were 'Chuck Berry on steroids' or something like that.

6. Slayer!
Followed by S.O.D., D.R.I. (they were metalcore crossover, but still), Anthrax, Voivod, Forbidden, Dead Brain Cells, Forced Entry, Iron Maiden, pre-Smell the Glove Metallica, Motorhead, Nuclear Assault, Vio-Lence and Testament.

Tossing Poison and Whitesnake in that "real metal" mix . . . no. I'll grudgingly give you Motley Crue and Ratt for their earlier works, but not those two. Hard rock acts, not metal.

8. Look - I'm not saying Poison and Whitesnake were good...
But Poison did write songs that followed the rules on what metal is. Even if they did a crappy job.

And yes, Whitesnake was a tough one. They were a ballad band for the most part - but I think the Coverdale creds and "Slide it In" qualify them.

10. You know what's funny about Poison?
To me, they sucked the flies off a dead dog's balls. Their fluffy, day-glo, ozone-destroying look was how most of the hipsters saw ALL forms of hard rock/heavy metal - as a vapid, empty headed stereotype. They were what I call a "fly-over" band . .. one of the millions of corporate hard rock poodle-haired bands I had to sit through during Headbangers Ball (because back then, your VCR was your "YouTube") for the first two hours before they played something by VoiVod, Megadeth or Nuclear Assault at 1:30 AM.

But play their songs to this day . . . I'll know every. single. word. The riffs. The solos. All of it. Even their not-so-heavily-played stuff. Eccch. Why is that? I blame repetitive play and the earworm phenomenon.

Yeah, Dangerous Toys. I did a story on them back in the day and met them backstage at a show. They seemed like nice guys.

28. Poison is not a metal band. It just isn't. Now, I pick Iron Maiden, but as for Poison being a metal
band, with all due respect, PLEASE.

Listen to Cindrella's second album (Long Cold Winter) - everything except for perhaps one song on that album is harder than anything Poison EVER did.

Also, with all due respect, Poison SUCKED.

32. I agree, Poison is definitely NOT a metal band, but Cinderella was.
I'd also point to Cinderella's debut album, (Night Songs). Most of the songs were definitely metal.
However, I also liked Cinderella's move to blues-rock on their third album. A lot of the metalists hated it, but it was a musically sound album and quite good. Very few metal or hard rock bands managed to pull off what Cinderella did.

Edited on Fri Oct-26-07 11:14 PM by judaspriestess
they are NOT metal bands. Poison was a rock band almost bubble gum rock but not a metal band as well as the other guys. Motley Crue's first album "too fast for love" was fairly hard but not metal. Ratt was Hard Rock and whitesnake was hard rock too.

Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Triumph - yes and no but they were definitely hard rock

In the eighties I was into... Slayer, Metallica, Metal Church, Napalm Death, SOD, Anthrax..... shit I have to think back now. That was metal :)

Queensryche's "The Warning" was close to metal and that was my favorite band in the eighties.

on edit: Judas Priest is one of my all time favorite bands and so is Pantera, Slayer to name a few.

70. I'd disagree with your definition of metal.
Priest and Maiden, yes; Cure, Ratt Poison, Whitesnake, no--I'd say they're hard rock. Back in the 80s, all of this music became the cool, popular music and somehow it was always called "metal." They lumped all the hard stuff into the category of metal, but much--if not most--of it was hard rock. I went to many a Wednesday night metal night in several clubs, and most of those bands were hard rock, with only a few being metal.

That said, my favorite band from that era was a band not many people heard: Cats In Boots. Great solid hard rock with an excellent singer and some cool lyrics. The band was two white American guys and two Japanese guys from Japan; they didn't speak each other's languages, but they sure communicated in the language of music. They did very well in Japan, then put out an album here and broke up not too long after.

Out of the bands everybody knows, I'd say Guns'N'Roses was my favorite. I'm still kicking myself for being too tired and blowing off an early GNR gig in a club after I'd gotten myself on the guest list.
