Pennsylvania makes me want to open a vein....

Luckily I live on the on the other side of the nation, about as far from Pennsylvania as I can get.

5. Oh, by the way...when you open that vein and see bright red blood, that means it's
arterial bleeding ( the worst kind )....don't stop. It's not that bad, really

7. yeah...can't quite understand your issue with that. You didn't clarify
but that's OK...because there are plenty of people from New Jersey who come here ( to work...of all things ) and complain about the fact that there are State Stores that sell liquor and bars that sell beer..they can get that stuff over in Jersey ( right across the damn bridge ). I have to listen to it every....fucking....DAY. I say, if it's that bad here, what the FUCK are you doing here in the first place? That question seems to receive a rather zombie-like response....

THAT is what confuses the shit out of me....I just....don't .....get it!!!

8. yeah, I have to say that the PA liquor laws were among the strangest...
Edited on Fri Oct-26-07 09:55 PM by mike_c
...I'd ever seen. I presume they haven't changed much? Where I lived (Annville and thereabouts), there was the state store for liquor or wine (baaaadddddd selection) and everyone had to go to a pizza parlor to buy beer, unless you wanted more than two six packs, in which case you had to go to a "case store." There weren't many of those, IIRC.

Out here in California, we buy whatever we want at the local grocery store. Anytime of the day or week.

10. Funny you mention that...because I'm about thirty minutes away from Center City Philadelphia
and I can't keep track of the places that sell beer, or, for that matter the Liquor Stores ( there are TONS of them ) I guess if you are living in the boonies ( and yeah, every state has those, I'm afraid ) you may have a difficult time getting a hold of some booze.

Shit...I'm barely on the outskirts of Philly, and nobody is lamenting the lack of the availability of booze or beer...you must be talking Deliverance country or something. Where the hell is Annville? Never even heard of it, but I'm just guessing it's western PA.

12. Yup-ers.....I pegged that one right..
You had a negative experience of this state from the AREA you were living in...

Figured as much...and I can't say I blame you for feeling that way, but if you go east a tad further, that situation would be MUCH different.

13. oddly we also seem to put malls in these strip mines when they are done...
yes, PA is crazy. Someday some archaeologist will wonder if some kind of religious ritual took place in these things.

Our roads suck too and for some bizarre, puritanical reason we can't buy beer or wine in the grocery store, like folks in civilized states...

14. you guys sound like someone who signed my guestbook. People really don't like PA....
Q. Where do you live? What sucks about it?

A. Pennsylvania. The nation's @$$hole by far! Its roads suck, there are no jobs, you pay taxes out the wazoo, and it's so rural, it's like one gigantic farm! It's also stuck 20-25 years in the past, like it can't get over the collapse of the steel mills and coal mines in the late 70's. This is also evident in the sense that we are not allowed to sell beer in our supermarkets, but you can do it virtually everywhere else in this country. Also, the residents are pretty much pukes. They are all either crotchety old farts who grew up WAY too hard and are all jaded and bitter, rednecks who live 50 miles out in the woods who eat nothing but Spam and listen to their Slim Whitman records all day, and blue-collar, shot and a beer tough guys who are always drunk or high and looking for a fight. I feel like one of those rare people who were born in the wrong state! And, Pittsburgh should be renamed "Shitsburgh" because it's the absolute shits!

15. Sounds like the person who asked this question has a personal grudge
maybe because they were turned down for sexual favors here...who knows...

But the answer is what REALLY gets me....the nation's asshole?   Uh, no..pal...by many that would be considered L.A or New York City, but not Pennsylvania. And unless you lived here, you just wouldn't understand. It's funny that I've never encountered those individuals you mentioned...you know, the ones who were "always drunk or high and looking for a fight" Ummm..yeah, not around here. And you ARE one of those RARE people...believe me, you are..indeed, rare.

We are really sorry that you were born in this state, too...our bad. We are willing to change any records according to your wishes..I'm sure it will please the state.

If your main gripe about Pennsylvania is not being able to purchase beer in a supermarket, then my advice to you would be to seek help from these people....you apparently need it

17. If There Is One Thing I Have Learned From DU
It is that people are very protective of their State. Kind of like, it is OK for them to make fun of it but outsiders better not. Don't even joke about Texas. Trust me.

21. no, it isn't THAT bad... I grew up in Butler County...
archaic in some ways, but lots of trees, many cultural activities here in Pittsburgh, good medical care, kind people, low housing prices and quite a few universities. Lots of Dem politics, at least here in the city, although i can't speak for the rest of the state.

And we did jettison Santorum....

18. I have said before
If the fuckin' Earth Firsters really gave a shit, they'd go protest the strip mines in the Appalachians.

But no, it's easy to hang out in Humboldt and smoke pot and freeload off people. :eyes:

22. Hail Pennsylvania
Noble and strong,
To thee with loyal hearts
We raise our song.
Swelling to Heaven
Loud our praises ring;
Hail, Pennsylvania!
Of thee we sing.

I often long for the rolling hills of home.

24. I just applied for a job in Philly
seems like a cool town, from what i've heard...

I'm a little worried about the cost of living, having been spoiled by cheap EVERYTHING in Columbus, OH.

The job is a long shot though, so i probably won't have to worry about it!
