Your bird is a mourning dove, very common around here. I like the perch and the turned head from behind. The river shot is very good as well. That 40D is one heck of a nice camera. I just invested in one too!

25. Oh, you scared me for a second!

;-) That tree was amazing. A woman on a bicycle stopped and asked me what I was taking pics of. I said "anything I see that's interesting"! She then told me about that tree and where it was on the path. I loved the excitement in her voice when she talked about it! The whole day was just beautiful.. then kind you wish would never end. :D
