2. I don't understand the surprise and confusion that people are supposed to feel
about the history of US foreign policy. States hardly ever have a consistent, completely non-contradictory global policy. Why are we supposed to be surprised/confused/angry because the US first sided with country A and then ten years later sided with country B, or that we try to keep a hand in both sides of a dispute (Israel/Saudi Arabia)? That's the way countries have been acting since, well, forever.

3. You're absolutely right
and it wouldn't be remarkable at all, except for this persistent notion that America is different. Even progressives seem to believe that America is somehow better than her peers, which maybe is why it is so appalling to see that actually it's just another country, as grubby, cynical and hypocritical as all the others.
