When you're connected to the internet, which is a series of tubes, and you want to make sure you either have a connection or determine the speed of your connection, someone else can send a signal from their end of the tube and see if they reach your side (or they can measure how fast they connect). It's quite scientifical.

I try to alternate eco/bio books with other random novels... just finished East of Eden by John Steinbeck. Lovely and heartbreaking and wonderful. So maybe Mr. Abbey should be next! :-)

If you're interested at all in biology education issues, i HIGHLY recommend the book Monkey Girl by Edward Humes. It's a really engrossing and readable account of the evolution trial in Dover PA back in 2005. It takes a fascinating look at the school board's antics in getting "Intelligent Design" (a.k.a. creationism) rammed down the throats of PUBLIC SCHOOL students... the book is fascinating because the author initially tries pretty hard to present both sides... but as it goes on you increasingly see him being persuaded by the (overwhelming) evidence and logic of the evolutionists and their lawyers. It's a really good read!
