"Just because it's Halloween doesn't mean you should dress like a hooker" These are little kids

people.

Some parents concerned many Halloween costumes aimed at young girls are too risqué
By STACY BYRNE
Tribune Staff Writer

The Kids' Spider Geisha costume at Target online consists of a short black dress decked in flowers and spiderwebs. (Isn't a geisha a Japanese girl who's trained to entertain men?) The Kids' Dazzling Devil costume is a little black and red number with scoop-neck corset top and flowing sheer sleeves; the picture shows a little girl wearing a black choker and high-heel shoes with the outfit. This costume is sold out.

Then there's Wal-Mart's Girls' Delinquent Devil costume, a short schoolgirl outfit with a vinyl-looking top and devilish accessories.

"Our daughter is 7 and we were looking through the costumes, and I can't believe some of the ones they have out there," said Betty Cole, a full-time mom who lives in Kevin. "Most of the costumes don't have enough material on them and either show their belly or have short skirts. It doesn't cover enough of their skin at 7 years old."

7. I don't blame the costumes.
I blame the manufacturers for adding a "Hello Kitty" format sex education pamphlet along with the costume.

20. i am quite possibly the farthest thing you will find from a prude
i'm easy. prudes would call me a deviant. etc. etc. etc.

but we shouldn't sexualize 8 year old kids.

this ain't an issue of prude-ness

26. eh, i suppose because this is just part of a larger issue
you don't think there's anything wrong when 8 year old girls think they need to look sexy? it's okay for a 10 year old to wear booty shorts with 'juicy' plastered across their ass? should they really make thongs for 8 year old kids?

it isn't unique to halloween costumes...

once you're a teenager, once you're in high school, then do what you will - i don't really care. but there needs to be a point when people say hey...that's a little weird, and probably shouldn't be the case.

27. I think it's OK for 8 year old girls to dress up for halloween.
I don't find it sexy and then blame the 8-year-old girls for being aroused. You?

28. did you just call me a pedophile?
are you serious?

i have a 9 year old cousin...cute as a button. her mom lets her dress like she's 16, and i have heard my cousin say that she needs to look sexy. why? "cause the pussycat dolls and bratz girls look sexy and look how cool they are!"

it's a problem...again, why do 9 year old girls think they need to be sexy?

i do not find 9 year old girls sexy. that is disgusting, and you are a funny guy and i like you, but you're also a total asshole for even suggesting that.

29. No.
But I do think prudes have their own sort of perversion.

I think if you look at those costumes in the article in the op and think "sexy" and "slutty" and "hookers" then...

1. you've got some issues with sexuality.

2. you've got some issues with women.

30. well
i told you i was talking about the larger issue. but you have basically been ignoring everything i said.

and i don't appreciate being called a prude, and i don't appreciate it being alluded to that i find 9 year olds sexy, or that i have some sort of perversion. do you know me? have you met me?

i like fucking women, my own age, who are sexy.

what i don't like, is people who make broad assumptions from behind a keyboard.

3. My seven year old daughter
is wearing a cute little fairy costume....with wings and flat shoes for walking. I would never let her wear some of the crap that is being sold to little babies...i.e. The Bratz stuff!
We have zero Bratz here because they are nothing more than hookers with over-priced clothes.

4. Most costumes for females are slutty
Regardless of age. It's difficult to find a girl's or woman's costume that isn't sexual in nature. I usually try to use clothes that I already have and/or dress like a guy. (I was a cowboy - yes, cowBOY - this year.)

25. I've been working at a costume store for the last two weeks
and we have a LOT of costumes that aren't at all slutty... but the little hoochies come in and they want hoochie costumes.

It's what sells, so it's what we stock... in addition to not-so-trampy witches, nuns, Ren women, senoritas, Native Americans, flappers, cowgirls, devils, hippies, saloon girls, large animals, doctors, Southern belles, police women, angels, 50's housefraus, and many, many more.

Not that these outfits aren't flattering, but there's a big difference looking good and looking like a hooker.

5. We talk about how COLD those outfits are.
I'm not gonna get into the whole "dress your kid like a hooker" discussion with my ten year old. I will, however, tell her that there has to be a whole lot more costume there or else she will be wearing a coat and sweat pants over the costume to keep from freezing her nubbins off...

Works like a charm!

Now, on a personal level, I gotta say that I see an awful lot of kids' clothing all year long that is just WAY too adult for kids to be putting on. If they are making it in a size 6X it probably shouldn't be see-thru, backless, or a thong...

17. Sure, it's freezing up here.
But there are places in the country that are plenty warm.

And warmth is the only reason why I would think anybody sane would have a problem with that costume.

13. I was just at a kids Halloween parade on Sunday
Must have been 100 kids there, and nobody was dressed like that, or even close. I think a little ballerina was probably the skimpiest costume because the poor girl didn't have a jacket or sweater on over her sleeveless costume.

14. Oh gods, where to start
First of all, this Church Lady reporter is making it sound like geishas are prostitutes, and they're not. They're artists trained in music, dance, and things like tea ceremony. I see nothing wrong with a little girl dressed like a maiko. It'd be cute.

Secondly that costume isn't revealing at all, unless you're some kind of Victorian prude (I think it's kind of lame and not geisha enough, but I think it's a cool enough concept that I'm going to try my own take on it).

19. I think "geisha" has to do with the kimono like style of the sleeves
It's a little more obvious on the "spider geisha" costume for grown ups.

I don't think it's the name that's freaked someone out, I think they always were freaks.
