The Holocaust Memorial in Berlin, Germany *pic heavy*
http://www.stiftung-denkmal.de/en

As some of you know, I was in Berlin last week for a couple of days. Here are the pictures of the "Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe". If you are ever going to visit Berlin, please go there. It is worth it. More than worth it.

The first impression

You walk into those blocks

Until they surround you

Then you go in the museum, which is underneath those blocks. The displays are on a very personal basis. They tell the stories of families. It is heartbreaking.
Here is the image of one of the rooms. The pics are blurry, I was only allowed to take pics without flash.

8. Just saw your pics of the Armenian Genocide museum
powerful pictures.

I've been to the Holocaust Museum in DC. It is impressive too. Completely different than the memorial in Berlin. Both are good at how they tell the story.

22. Those building the 9/11 memorials are bogged down.
With trying not to make things crescent shaped. Can you believe it? Of all the absurdity.

"with right-wing activists alleging an anti-American bias in some of the written statements and a perceived pro-Islam bias based on an alleged crescent shape of the memorial."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/9/11_Memorial_(Arizona)

"This design drew criticism because it was entitled "Crescent Embrace". The crescent is the symbol of the Ottoman Empire, which was the last major Muslim world power, and the alleged terrorists who hijacked the aircraft were Muslim and conducted the attacks in the name of Islam."

37. I am beginning to think that entire project will never actually be finished.
There is too much political BS and economic interest involved to be able to resolve the situation in a way that will satisfy everyone and also be an appropriate memorial for those whose lives were lost.

18. so sad, Genocide of any nationality is criminal, now we are
committing genocide or ethic cleansing in Iraq, I wonder how many stories we will hear about our soldiers killing innocent Iraqis from Iraqis who survived.

27. I really do hope not
the bad thing is genocide or ethic cleansing has been going on for centuries (Native Americans), is going on today (Rwanda, former Yugoslavia) and will go om in the future as well I am sure.

20. Very moving
I was just watching a program last night about the end of the war when the Americans discovered the camps. The pictures were just too upsetting for words. I had to force myself to look at them. I feel it is my duty as a human to truly acknowledge the enormity of what happened. It's too easy to look away.

Thanks MissH.

I have still avoided seeing the holocaust museum here in NYC. I want to go, but I won't go alone.

I want to see it, but at the same time I really don't.

John and I went to Mauthausen when my mom and brother were with us, and it is unbelievably disturbing, in a way that everyone should experience. It's the only place I've been to that made me nauseated and I had a strong sense of wanting to physically run away.

but I got sick so we couldn't go. THat is one place I really want to see. THe interesting thing about the holocaust memorial in Berlin is that it is so personal. It is really going right underneath the skin.
