4. I don't particularly care for them, either....
I wouldn't go so far as to say they suck (that's reserved for the likes of Nickelback) but overall, they just don't appeal to me. The only exception is the Roll the Bones album (which seems to be a lot of their hard-core fans' LEAST favorite).

5. Rush is fucking cold, sterile crap hidden under complex time signatures.
I watched Neil Peart do a jazz drum solo at a tribute to Buddy Rich and it exemplified exactly why I hate Rush and most prog in genetral: It was technically very proficient, but it was just lacking in heart or sincerity.

7. To a point, I agree...
Peart doesn't swing, so for him to attempt to play like Buddy is laughable.

I find that some of the band's output since the late 80's (around about the "Hold Your Fire" album) shows some degree of human emotion lyrically... even as far back as the "Signals" album Peart's lyrics were moving away from the mythology/philosophy/technology mish-mash of earlier stuff (2112, The Necromancer, Hemispheres, Cygnus X-1...) and starting to veer into more personal/emotional territory. Even so, Peart's virtuous but robotic playing insures that songs like 'Time Stand Still' and 'Ghost of a Chance' have a sterile edge to them.

11. Even with more emotional/personal lyrical content, it just comes off as insincere to me.
Most prog I've heard tends to have that problem, at least in my view (save for some newer prog-esque bands like The Mars Volta, you can tell those motherfuckers are giving it their heart and soul).

13. I don't think they suck as a band. Frankly...
...I think they did their *best* as a band. They are who they are. Who they are just doesn't happen to be one of my favorite bands. I can't imagine any other band with Neil Peart in it being all that different from what Rush became. Growing up in the '70s and '80s as I did, Rush never really moved me. I was more into Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Stones, The Who, etc. In retrospect, I was leaning towards bands that had their roots in the '60s, and in blues and R&B. Today, I own on CD "Moving Pictures" and their Greatest Hits album (or one of them), and I do listen to them on occasion. I'd actually never heard the song "The Camera Eye" until about five years ago. I thought it was fucking monumental, and immediately went out and bought "Moving Pictures," and wasn't disappointed. It's all in all a pretty fine, tight and inspired album from a fairly bleak year (1981) in rock 'n' roll history. I also give them credit for being a trio-- they produced a rich, full sound with just the three of 'em. Ultimately, I find them limited, but yeah, technically quite talented.(Even Geddy, after he stopped shrieking so much.)

and the Quebecois movement was caused by guess what, Quebec didn't want to be in the same country as Rush.

d00d, they suck, they are so much fun to make fun of.

Nickelback is worse, however, I prefer Rush's no feeling to Nickelback's faux-feeling.

That flyer is from Rush's first big gig- as opening act for the New York Dolls in Toronto '73. Geddy Lee with scarves and platform boots is terrifying indeed.

41. Dolls were history in a year or two while those other bands
went on to make millions. That's always the way it goes. I don't know that they picked those acts as openers- the Dolls were actually on a major label and had to jump through the hoops Mercury set up for 'em.
