10. It was powerful.
Will Smith was brilliant. And I appreciated how the animation team created the zombies. They were apart from the usual.

If I could, I would write an essay drawing parallels in story structure between "The Children of Men" and "I am Legend."

It was an excellent film.

6. I hope the movie is better than the book, the book sucked so hard.
But I guess that is what passed for horror in 1954.

8. Was Will doing his usual schtick?
I used to enjoy it in "Fresh Prince" but it was pretty tired by the time he did "I, Robot."

But then I like Will Smith.

SPOILERS

When he finds out that he's not the only person left was the highlight of the movie for me. Pretty intense, and believable.

...for a long long time. He was just playing "generic smartassed West Philly kid" in everything he did. Good to hear he's grown into a good actor.

Tom Cruise has being playing basically the same person his whole career for almost 25 years now.

13. I'm with you - it was an entertaining movie
And Will Smith was very good in it. Shots & CGI of an empty NYC were really well done and accurate from what I understand how nature would begin to take the city back. Kudos to the dog as well - German Shepherds are one of my favorite breeds.

Didn't make any sense. Not much happened really. Maybe it's because I'm not much of a zombie film guy. Eh.

CGI is taking over the world.

17. Well, that's just it. I wasn't, but that's how it came off to me.
For some reason, I didn't buy the "talking to stuff" bit, either. It came off to me as lame attempts at jokes, like in the video store. It worked for me in Castaway, though. Wilson!

Maybe it is because I am used to the previous characters of Will Smith. Perhaps an unknown in the role would have been better?

18. See, the way I read that is a man struggling to maintain his sanity...
after three years of complete isolation, save his dog. He obviously set up those dummies as a means to maintain his sense of humanity. He gave them names and spoke to them - not as a joke, but as a means of mentally handling the bleak landscape and the loss of people dear to him. I bought it.

As far as comparing it to the volleyball in "Castaway"... all I can say is, "Yeah, if I were in that position, I'd probably grab a stick and name it - as long as I give myself a sense of companionship."

19. I think what ruined the sense of isolation was Sam
People can live happily with their pets as companions. His character should have been completely isolated. It would have been a lot more effective then, IMO.

20. Hmmm... that would have been interesting (spoiler!!!!!!!!)
although I waited during the first half of the movie for the dog to die. It would have been the only way to raise the stakes for Will Smith's character.

Watching him cradle the poor mutt as he transformed was so sad. I nearly cried.

23. Can you explain to me then how that manniquin "Fred"
...ended up in front of Grand Central, and he then got caught in the trap? I didn't get that at all.

What did I miss? Did he set that up himself then forget about it? Or are we supposed to believe the zombies had enough reason left to do it?

28. I think your first idea is correct...
that he set the trap before and had forgotten it, using Fred as a decoy, perhaps.

God, I hated that scene.

33. Me too.
...and it bugs me when I have to find my own explanation for a film's loose end, it becomes necessary to reason it out after you walk out of the theatre.

I'm a writer too, and I would never let such a point fall by the wayside.

(Of course, editors have more to do with content than we do!)

38. See I thought it was the zombies (spoilers)
Which raises the interesting question of how intelligent were they. They obviously could work in a cooperative fashion, seemed to respond to the lead zombie's commands and he seemed to be in control of the dog zombies. He also risked his own "life" by coming out in the sun when will smith captured the female. All of which seems to indicate an ability to reason, but that point wasn't addressed in the movie at all unfortunately.

40. That was my interpretation...
that the "lead" zombie set up the trap.

But then later it occured to me that Robert might have set up the trap himself and forgotten about it.

Robert's sort of an unreliable protagonist, ya know?

I don't mind movies with things left open to interpretation, in any case. :)

29. Oh NO - see "I Am Legend" before you ever see "Beowulf"
Beowulf was AWFUL. And I'm as big of a heroic epic/swords/dragons/fantasy nut as you can get. The CGI was creepy and the plot "reimagining" ruined the whole thing for me. I Am Legend, OTOH, was probably the creepiest, most atmospheric movie I've seen in a long time.

27. The guy who wrote the book , was my neighbor for years and years
Edited on Sat Dec-15-07 10:55 PM by Capn Sunshine
He wrote (among many)the famous Twilight Zone where a young William Shatner sees a monster on the wing of a plane and freaks out. His daughter and my sister were bestest of friends

The Book is different than the movie; the reason he "Is Legend" is because the vampires that come out at night are more human than not, and he is known among them as the guy who kills aso many of them. It might have made better movie drama IMO if they had stuck to the book's idea of articluate and conscious vampires, including his best friend, who comes to his door every night beseeching him to join them.
