Who watched the Tournament of Roses Parade today?
Did you notice the "Impeach Bush and Cheney" signs that bystanders were holding up? :bounce:

1. I thought about it for about a second, then peed instead and had more coffee
and when I finally turned on the TV, I watched a Modern Marvels show about Times Square.

3. Hearing that lots of protest signs were up makes my heart glad!
Now I kind of wish I had watched it.

And Times Square is a kind of Modern Marvel - it was the history of it, how it was constructed, how it changed over time. Fascinating!

I was never a big Times Square kind of guy because when I moved to NYC it was a shithole, and then it got Disneyfied - but then we moved our offices there after 9-11, and I came to appreciate the area in its own way - though it was *#)*#% nightmare hell trying to get outside for a nip of lunch with all the *(#%(# tourists blocking sidewalks and crap.

And it has a fascinating history.

7. I counted at least 5...all near the grandstand...
For a little while, there was a Kucinich banner being held up; but they were holding it up next to a banner that said "Impeach", so it looked like they were suggesting that the gov't should "Impeach Kucinich". They eventually figured it out.

Happy New Year SallyMander!

11. There are probably a dozen grandstands.
The parade route is over 5.5 miles.

I got to see the Rose Parade in person on Jan 1 2002. It was quite an experience.

In fact, in SoCal, there are all sorts of tours to go see it. You buy the package deal, get a bus ride to the Parade, seating in one of the grandstands, a snack on the way to the parade (the busses usually leave at about 4 AM) and a box lunch (or catered buffet depending upon the tour), so you do not have to camp out to get a good place to view it. That is how we did it back in 2002.

We plan on doing it again next year.

14. I'd love to see the parade...
It's my favorite of all those that are televised. Sounds like you found the right way to get a spot! :-)

The signs I saw were all near the same grandstand. From the pictures Rabrrrrrr and bob_weaver linked, it appears to have been a pretty large, well-organized protest.

5. I noticed them immediately. KTLA kept them on the screen longer than I thought they would.
I guess KTLA didn't notice them very quickly. Also did you see the constitution that was paraded after the parade was over?

9. I watched the parade on Discovery's hi-def channel...
They camera kept panning by the signs every time a float went past. It wasn't until the last 15 minutes or so of the show that I didn't see the signs anymore. Maybe they all left to march with the Constitution. I didn't see that go by. WooHoo! :D

10. I saw the parade this morning
with LizzieGrace and LeLapin. I didn't notice the sign, but we were hanging out and talking instead of paying attention. And I was packing to come home.

16. I didn't mind Eubanks so much...
Usually I wish the commentators would just shut up. But Eubanks and his co-host managed to keep the yipyap to a minimum. I like hearing the bands play. :D

13. Saw the protestors in the background on NBC's parade coverage.
AP says that one of the groups of Cindy's protestors got booed by the crowd in one of the grandstands.

Also saw a banner of handcuffs forming the olympic rings when the Bejing 2008 float passed by. IIRC, that's from Reporters Without Borders. I remember seeing a story about this campaign on the AP news feed when I was interning in London over the summer.

17. Yahoo's site included some pics of the pro-Taiwan demonstrators too.
Too bad about the Code Pink group being booed. I think a lot of folks still associate protest of the misadministration with "not supporting the troops". :(
