I have been to the gym three times since Saturday.
When do I start feeling better?

And, I am taking it slowly - so I do not overdo things, but damn it still wears me out.

Just know that you are doing the very right thing!

And eventually (probably the 2 to 3 weeks quoted) you will feel better!

4. You do have to
Edited on Wed Jan-02-08 05:31 PM by lost-in-nj
exercise while you are there.
You can't just "go"...

anyway.... it will be a gradual thing...
one day you will realize your pants are a little looser
your energy level is a little higher.
and you will discover muscles you never knew you had....
I like when my muscles hurt... then I know I have done something...
just keep it up!!!
and don't forget the cardio

:hi:
edit: when you feel better take some classes.... I take a body sculpting class on Monday and Weds. and a flexi-ball class on Friday

9. Cardio every visit for 20 minutes
Chest, arms, shoulders and lats one visit and hamstrings, quads, calves, lower back, hip adductors, hip abductors, abdominals and obliques the next. On a MWF - TThSa pattern.

I am working with my doctor on this, and I have to be careful with my heart, lung and joint issues.

10. Good for you!
Weights or cardio first?

Did your doc do a full workup before you started? I wish more folks would talk to their doctors about fitness, ESPECIALLY those that wind up with some gonzo personal trainer.

11. Yes, I had a full workup beforehand.
I have been doing the cardio first. My thinking is that the cardio first serves as a warmup to the weight training.

I make sure to stretch after all of it too.

15. If you switch them
(being sure to stretch first) you'll burn more calories doing that cardio. Honest.

20. Yep.
Plus there's less chance of injury. Then there's this whole glycogen thing I won't get into.

Good rule of thumb: Stretch, then 5 mins of cardio to get the blood flowing, then weights, then the real cardio.

The weight training will also pre-elevate your heartbeat/metabolic rate, thus establishing a higher starting point and burn rate on the cardio end.

30. I thought you should do a five-minute cardio warmup first, then stretch.
Warms up the muscles so they are more flexible. Stretching "cold" muscles isn't good (they're more prone to injury), that's what I've heard.

31. And another question, how do you warm up for yoga, since
yoga is predominantly stretching?

What should come first in a routine?

Yoga?

Weight Lifting?

Running?

42. Basic light stretching for yoga
to sort of "limber up".

Doing all three activities in a routine is something I've never been asked. Yoga can be pretty intense. I'd keep it split from the other two.

Running then weight lifting. Yoga much later. That is, unless it's a less intense yoga practice, which would be a GREAT cool down after weight training.

33. They just opened a new one
about 5 miles away, so a lot of people go there instead. The new one is HUGE and frankly, looks daunting.

I'm a bit worried that it's going to be crowded tonight, as people tend to freak out right after the holidays and hit the gym fairly regularly for a month or two. I can't go until 6:30 or 7, so it's usually fairly full (though I haven't had to wait for a machine yet).

26. A few weeks
This is just my experience with exercise (running, yoga, weight lifting and jog-walking) is that it takes about four to six weeks for the body to begin producing endorphins during exercise. Then the brain associates that exercise with pleasure, and it becomes something you enjoy. The only danger I've encountered is that exercise can become an obsession or an addiction.

Enjoy! I know you will love it soon.

32. KW, it takes a long time to get to the point where you want to go...
But I'm finally at that place where I know that if I stop working out for a week or whatever due to illness, etc., I KNOW I will get right back into it. It's a good feeling to know that you've established a lifelong habit.

I actually mostly exercise at home, so the regularity can work for home workouts, as well.

39. have you increased your water intake?
It's going to be difficult to shake that rundown feeling if you're not fully hydrated. I find that I also need an extra hour of sleep as well when I weight train or else I'm useless the next day.

If I'm consistent with my water and sleep, it usually takes about a week to two weeks to feel that wonderful energy surge.
