Sweet. I got my 1st mailserver up and running today.
Postfix + Dovecot. w00t! Next week will bring ssl, imap, smtp auth, and whatever else I may decide to play with.

:headbang:

I'm trying to get the boss (mail server admin) to switch from sendmail/qpopper ... it's going to be a hard sell, as he is sendmail proficient! So far, I think I'm winning! B-) He is at the very least willing to listen to me, his lesser!

2. Awesome :)
I will admit to being unskilled in just about everything you mentioned above, but I've got experience in the "convincing your boss to switch software systems by proof by example" department. Best of luck to you!

3. Nice! Don't forget to stick something like SpamAssassin on there too.
Your boss will be even more impressed if his mail is squeaky clean and lemony fresh.

4. Yeah, I plan on it. Probably ClamAV too....
We use both on our production sendmail server currently. We also have our own home-grown spam rbl, and the mail admin wrote a program that acts as a GUI frontend to the whole deal to make it easier for users to turn filtering on/off and have their own white/black list.

Pretty neat stuff!

5. That sounds very cool.
And it sounds like your users are a bit more clueful than the norm too, if they can be trusted to configure their own filters.

6. Well, usually they call and want us to do it for them.
You know how that goes. We discourage a lot of that by pointing them in the direction of doing it themselves, then tell them they can call back if they get stuck or have any questions. :D We're very skilled at trying to force people to think for themselves, without them feeling like that's what we're doing. They can't muck them up too much though - so that also helps.
