HALP!
I have a new skittish cat named Yoruichi, a calico. I got her earlier today. Does anyone have any advice on how to make her more comfortable and less shy? She was very amiable at the pound.

1. Give her time
be patient and don't make any sudden moves around her. Talk quietly and gently. I adopted a one year old stray. The first year was tough. The last 6, she still will bolt under the furniture when I come into the room even though she's never, ever had reason to fear me.

I have no idea what happened to her in her early life. I just accept her quirks.

 for adopting a cat.

^_^

If only she was as sweet as she was at the pound. Oh well, time to be patient.

5. Ditto. Time.
Now that she has what she wanted from you, she doesn't need to be all lovey.

Seriously, though, she's in a completely new environment, when all she was asking for was kibble and cuddles. Once she is mistress of her new domain, I'm sure you'll find her a gracious ruler. Don't surprise her. Announce your moves, and always let her see you coming. You may find that by tomorrow she'll be in your lap, if you're quiet and gentle. Or it might take a few weeks.

Good luck!

4. Yoruichi (Yo-yo) is doing well
She's used the box and should become less shy with time.

6. Patience is the key. Talk to her in a soft soothing voice, don't
make sudden moves and let her explore her new environment on her own terms. It may take a few days, but she will eventually settle in and I'm sure she will be fine.

7. I'll let her hide and what-not
She'll come out on her own, right?

9. I'm sure she will. If she was friendly to you at the shelter, she will
be friendly to you in her new environment as soon as she feels at ease.

10. OK
I'm just glad Yoruichi's already trained. It helps not having to scrub the carpets.

8. Do NOT give her cheeseburgers...
No matter how much she pleads, and no matter how much other DUers tell you that you should. There be dragons there.

11. yeah, everyone's suggestions are right on
she is just shy. What you might try is adding some rescue remedy to her water http://www.rescueremedy.com/
The shelter that I volunteer at uses this regularly in their cats water- it calms the felines down some. You can buy it at Petsmart or other pet stores. I am just amazed that she was so social at the pound, usually it is the other way around. And in my experience, calico's and torties tend to be more shy and skittish than other breeds. You might also want to post this on the pets section of DU. Good luck!
