Owl imprint left in snow.
This picture is so cool. The luck of stumbling upon this. The person that took this picture got a killer one of a kind shot.

11. Not at all.
I found it while using StumbleUpon.

I just love that you can see the feathers in the snow. It had to be an amazing feat of predation to not leave a big gaping hole instead of a soft fluttery imprint.

Animals are amazing.

22. It's a sinus thing...
When I got back from dogsitting, the house reeked of onions. Mr GoG put 4 baseball-sized onions in a pot of beefaroni he made.

Add that to the front that's moving through and the dry air, and I'm a mess! I'm sure I'll feel better once I can get to sleep.

My owl country doesn't have snow so I'm not at all familiar with their forensics. Could hawks or eagles leave similar marks?

The picture description said owl, so I took it as that.

I'm sure that a hawk or eagle could leave similar marks, but the body shape looks square and thick like an owl to me. YMMV.

43. I completely understand what you're talking about.
My in-laws have an owl that lives around their house. It comes down by the house around sunset and sits up in the trees completely obstructed by branches. About the same time, the mourning doves come down and sit in the lower branches. One night when we were sitting out front on the porch, I starting whistling to the mourning doves. The owl started answering me back. I would say that the owl and I went back and forth for about 30 minutes. My mother-in-law and husband were laughing at me and calling me Dr. Doolittle, but it was an awesome experience and I felt privileged having had that conversation.

34. Actually, it looks to me like an owl swooped down & caught a rabbit...
To me, this makes yours an even more powerful picture.

I see rabbit tracks heading into where an owl (or eagle)swooped upon it's prey head-on -- and the inertia of the attack forced the bird's wings to imprint the snow in front of the tracks with its wingspan.

35. You can even see at least two imprints from the wingtips.
Just forward of the main wing impression. The perpendicular elongated impressions in the foreground of the main wing impression are the tail feathers which are spread during landing/strike like a airplane lowering it's flaps. Very cool.

I'd love to see the pics if you still have them or scanned in. :bounce:

One night, my husband and I were driving down a dark stretch of highway and an owl swooped across in front of the car. It was so startling, but I'll never forget the shape of it. The wingspan was across the entire width of our Honda Accord.

58. As a young'un, I was undaunted by cold.
I grew up in the wild woods of Western Michigan 2 miles inland, off Lake Michigan. We averaged about 168 inches of snow each winter. Cold wasn't really a problem, I would dig a sort of foxhole in the side of a snow drift or down into the snow and line it with the space blanket, it was toasty and I could stay there for hours... even overnight to try and capture them on film.

I wish those photos were handy, but they are packed away in the attic while we s-l-o-w-l-y remodel the house. :eyes: Oh yeah, we're on the ten year plan... :banghead:

I've had some near misses like you describe! Please, don't ask me to recount the number of times that I've swerved and nearly driven into ditches trying to catch a good look at a bird!
