What in God's good name is Trader Joes?
Edited on Mon Jan-07-08 12:33 PM by PeterU
Please enlighten me. The only thing I know about the place is that half the people who go there are lesbians, and the other half of the people choose to stay in the car.

2. It's a grocery store.
They carry kind of a mix of health and foodie stuff, and a lot of booze, and they're cheap. Needless to say, that makes them very popular with the lushes in the lounge set.

14. That's the nice thing about CA. Except for a few cities with limited permits, most anyplace can sell
almost any kind of alcohol. And everything is open on Sundays, which drives me nuts when I travel to areas where things close down.

Not state, county, and I think we are the only county in the country that does.

I miss the easy access, too.

They've got a LOT of wines for under 5 dollars, nuts/dried fruit/snax, frozen fish, frozen cakes and pies, bread, some fruits and veggies, canned foods....

Here the clientele is college students, yuppies, and granolas.

You can count on good quality there. They have great veggies, chocolates, organic products, lot's of fair trade products. A good example is Burundi Coffee, 1 lb for less then $5.00. Oh yeah, and for those who imbibe, two buck chuck.

7. It's a cult. Don't fall for the "it's a grocery store" line. That's how they trick you into joining
They have some weird rituals, like special Hawaiian style shirts, secret ship's bell signals and ritualistic communion offerings of coffee and hot food samples.

coffee and a number of food items at a much better price
than the local grocery store.

http://www.traderjoes.com/index.html

They are a green store and promote bringing your own
bags by issuing tickets when you do.
The tickets are used for a drawing where you can win
a $50.00 gift card ( Trader Joe's).

It's a fun place to shop, too.

Their fish is of surprisingly high quality for frozen fish.

We only go to the grocery store and Whole Foods for filler stuff we can't get at Trader Joes.

MONTEREY -- Barbecue sauce was key evidence in the arrest of a 28-year-old Carmel driver who allegedly went for a joyride inside a Trader Joe's supermarket in Monterey Wednesday morning, causing serious damage to the store.

Barbecue sauce stains found in the wheels and door wells of Geoffrey David Langkamp's car when police spotted it at a gas station near the Trader Joe's helped link Langkamp to the vandalism.

What this story doesn't say is that this TJ's was brand new. Indeed, it hadn't even opened yet.
