1. open office
You can open a .doc in Open Office writer and save it as a .pdf

And it's free.

3. I downloaded open office last night
but have yet to try it out.

You like? Good to hear about the pdf converter. That's built in, right?

4. I prefer Open Office.
It takes some getting used to when switching over, but I think it has more features that I use (and the .pdf capability is a huge help.) It's also not so bloated, which I like- I've got loads of hard drive room, but I don't want microsoft bloatware filling it all up.

7. I have been using pdf995.com for years...
You install it as a printer, and you pick that printer when you need a document converted. The ads can be annoying, but they remind me that pdf995 is FREE, and that gets me over it!

9. From my perspective a mac is just an expensive and irritating flavor of BSD.

8. For windows I've used pdf factory with good results.
http://www.fineprint.com/products/pdffactory/index.html

Open Office is free if you simply need to convert docs, but pdf factory installs as a printer driver and let's you make a pdf from any Windows application you can print from, and will even allow you to combine the output from multiple applications into a single pdf document.

(pdf creation is built into Linux, which is just one of the reasons I'll only use Microsoft products if someone is paying me to do it.)

10. WordPerfect-- been using it for years, but...
as with Open Office, you have to load the Word doc, and if the doc is complex a lot of reformatting has to be done. Native WP docs convert just fine.

Sometimes it's best to use one of the Ghostscript-based converters.

12. I just use a pdf printer driver.
the one I use is called CutePDF if I recall correctly. What it does is emulate a printer driver, so you go to print any kind of file and you actually 'print' it directly to a pdf file.

It can't do all the tricks you can do with some of the software that's out there, but it converts things to PDF and it's free. :) So that's all I care about.
