8. Just as long as it is not REAL drama in my life, we are all cool
When the fires came within a mile of my house back in October, I figured I have had enough real life drama for about 10 years.

9. That Would Do It, Ma'am
We woke up one winter morning years ago to a raging fire in the building across the gangway from us, It had started in a kitchen and the gas line was feeding it: the thing was hot enough it melted the ice and snow to puddles. Quite a jolt.

10. Yikes!
Our air quality was really bad for like 3 weeks after the fire. I guess since almost the whole southern half of the state was burning, the smoke and ash had to go somewhere. The week of the fire, I maybe got a grand total of 10 hours sleep.

21. Byzantine, Ma'am?
That would be my guess, anyway, about the tenth or eleventh century.

If the banner is hand-painted and not a decal, it is superb work for the scale, which looks to be 25mm to my eye.

23. They Deserve A Better Reputation Than They Have Preserved, Ma'am
The place lasted a very respectable length of time, and in Belisarius produced the master general of our era.

27. Who Painted That, Ma'am?
He commanded Byzantine forces against the Persians, and against the Goths in Italy. He won more victories with slenderer forces and fewer casualties to his men than any other of history's Great Captains. My recollection of details is pretty rusty, but Basil Liddel-Hart, the leading strategic theorist of the last century, thought the world of him, and that is more than enough for me.

29. I kind of got my ass kicked too
Not overly bad, but I made a big analysis on the polls on myspace yesterday. Good thing nobody ever reads my bulletins. It could have been embarassing. Then again, pundits have no shame about being wrong 90 percent of the time, so why should I? :)

30. I Guessed Wrong, Too, Sir
I called it for Sen. Obama, but with a margin of less than five percent, this morning: you can ask my wife....

I was also wrong about Fred: I predicted last year when he was first talked up he would not get a single vote in a primary, and he seems to have got a thousand or so.....

It's good to see him getting up around noon and hitting the trail hard enough to underwhelm everybody into giving him some pity votes. The man's a damn prodigy that's for sure.
