Post Your Desktop
Haven't seen one of these in awhile, and I have no life, so this is what I'm doing on Saturday night.

2. Not sure ...

I think I got it from kde-look.org, simply because I browse through the wallpapers posted there every once in awhile and got most of them from there. But I could have got it from a site that browsing the KDE site led me to.

I have more wallpapers than any one person should. :-)

5. Oh, I like that ...

To get a screen-cap from Windows, assuming you're using Windows, you hit SHIFT-PrtScn. Then open the paint program, paste into the blank image, and save it. Then of course upload it to some place like photobucket.

7. Some shots of machines running now, boring, as always (dial-up warning)
As you can see, I'm not a big eye-candy man. I didn't include the desktop machine since it's running Linux with the same wallpaper shown on the Linux laptop. I noramally scale these down, but I decided not to this time.

8. Eye Candy ...
I resisted eye candy for a long time. I work from the CLI a lot and just found no use for it.

Then, one day, long, long ago in a galaxy pretty close to home, I got bored and decided to mess with all this crap in the KDE appearance menu.

Ruined me, it did.

That first one is *far* more eye-candy-ish than what you normally post. You may want to be careful. The dark side beckons. :-)

10. LOL, well, that's one of the default themes that come with OS2008 that I just
installed on it. I've got the OS on an 8G SD Card, so I'm in the process of adding/figuring out how to add Minix, Source Mage GNU/Linux, Oberon OS and AFROS/ARAnyM (an Atari OS) on it -- some I'll have to get to work with the ARM processor :)

91. It's pretty easy to disable now
I find I have to turn off desktop effects twice, once for compiz and once for the default Fedora desktop effects (using the same shutdown applet, no less!) to get rid of the effects completely- which, like you, I have to do for some things. Oddly, GL apps like Blender seem to have no issues running with the effects turned on. That said, games like CNC3 under Wine do sometimes need to have the effects turned off.

Compiz-fusion makes Window$ Aero look like a rushed, two-bit, amateur hack job by comparison. I say that in all seriousness.

94. Oh, I agree ...

And Windoze Aero is a rushed, two-bit, amateur hack job, emphasis on "rushed." The very idea for Aero came out of the same conference/discussion that resulted in Aero. Gates just threw money at it ... and still didn't do it well.

I see a lot of rumbling about how people skin KDE and GNOME to "look like" Aero. The reverse is closer to the truth.

It's difficult to make a dark theme that works well when you use native GNOME apps and KDE apps about equally.

Took me forever to work it so the text entry boxes on web forms -- like this one I'm typing in now -- weren't all squirrelly.

42. I have two landscapes that I switch back and forth between.
This first one is of a road north of Biggar, Saskatchewan, where my musical Sarah Binks, The Sweet Songstress of Saskatchewan premiered. It's also the scene on the CD cover.

This second one is a shot taken near Parkbeg, Saskatchewan, just outside of Regina where I grew up. The icons don't stand out as easily when this is my wallpaper, so I use the other one more often.

The oracle scene in motion is nice to look at. They must have originally filmed it underwater. The film's stylization is pretty good. I had doubts before seeing it. You might have to leave your brain on a shelf to survive the comic book heroism and violence, though.
