LCD owners - dumb question
Would you amplify brightness, to compensate for a cheap panel? Most LCD monitors have a "vivid" setting that enhances color range, at the expense of brightness and shadow detail. Such compensation "blooms" (washes out) whites across slightly darker areas. A trained eye would be annoyed; casual viewers would only be interested in the latest Britney news at 6 anyway...

I rarely notice the effect, but I've kept it on.

If I always watched in a darker room, it wouldn't make a difference to turn on the vivid feature...

What say you?

1. Here's a paste of my answer to a similar question
"Big topic, the AVS forums are a labyrinth but have tons of info.

Having said that .....

Where to get the test patterns: http://www.w6rz.net/

"Free calibration soft (non-excel)"

I'm using a primitive and oldish LCD HDTV so I can't provide any insight to the guides.

Good luck!"
