You fucking village idiots need to get over the Delaware Tollbooth thingie
Seriously - you act like Delaware is the only state EVER to actually have a tollbooth and btw, if you talk to people from Delaware - we aren't stupid enough to drive thru them.

Why don't you STFU about it and come visit my state - I'll show you what a wonderful lil place we have here.

Honestly, does madinmaryland have a life or does he just sit around and obsess about tollbooths 24x7.

How fancy!

In Minnesota we have... no toll roads.

There's a toll HOV lane on I-394 in the Western Suburbs, but that's it, I believe.

Our potholes are plaza-sized, though...

When I lived in Doylestown I would take Rt 80 to criss-cross the state. It would add about an extra 30minutes on the trip but save about $45 roundtrip on tolls

114. The end of tolls in Connecticut...
THE END OF TOLLS: Another tragic 1983 accident led to an important decision regarding the future of the Connecticut Turnpike. In January of that year, a tractor-trailer collided with three cars at the Stratford toll plaza, taking the lives of seven people and injuring many more. The accident prompted state officials to consider removing the eight barrier toll plazas on the turnpike.

In wake of the Mianus River Bridge and Stratford toll plaza tragedies, Governor William O'Neill embarked on a 10-year, $6.56 billion program to reconstruct and rehabilitate Connecticut's roads and bridges. Under this program, which was to be financed by a hike in the state gasoline tax, barrier tolls were to be removed from the Connecticut Turnpike and from the state's bridges. The tolls were removed from the turnpike on October 9, 1985. Four years later, barrier tolls were abolished statewide.

In addition to being a safety hazard, the tolls on the Connecticut Turnpike were criticized for many years by New York officials for another reason. The tokens used by the automatic toll machines fit easily into the token machines used by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) in New York City. Residents of New York and Connecticut often purchased the Connecticut Turnpike tokens for one-fourth the cost of the MTA tokens, and used them in buses and subways.

I had forgotten about the token issue!

127. I didn't arrive in CT until April, 1985 but there were still tolls on I 95.
And I remember one crash that caused a fatality around that time.

It's interesting because I go to Boston all the time to see my grandkids and there is never a problem with the Mass Pike tolls. And I don't think EZ Pass has anything to do with it. Any idea why?

128. My guess is that there is a lot more congestion on I-95 than the Mass Pike.
Also, on I-95 from NYC to at least New Haven, the tpke is almost an obstacle course with all of the curves and left hand exits.

132. I used to raise money at evening soirees in Greenwich and return home to New Haven
around midnight and I often took the Merritt because I couldn't stand the Walpurgisnacht of I 95, particularly the Bridgeport exits. The only problem with the Merritt is that it has long stretches where there is no lighting and that can be a little off putting when you are driving alone late at night...

The only item you can buy that has taxes are the typical 'sin taxes' (cigerettes and booze - some of the cheapest still in the area) and cars (2.25%). Everything EVERYTHING else - tax free. Hell my family comes down to DE to do their major shopping.

70. We finally got a toll road in the People's Republic of MN a couple years ago
Actaully, it's just an HOV lane that goes from downtown Minneapolis to the western suburbs. But it's still a toll road.

And seeing as our bridges have this wicked tendency to fall into the Mississippi River at rush hour (and nobody wants to raise taxes to fix them), I have a feeling we'll be seeing more of them in the North Star State.

90. The tolls are awfully high for 23 miles
The only tolls in Maryland are for the tunnel in Baltimore and the Susqehanna River bridge, and Maryland's section of I-95 is a lot longer. Once you're south of Baltimore, I don't believe there are any tolls all the way to Florida. So why does Delaware need to rip people off to the tune of about $8 or more just to travel 23 miles?

The other thing is getting stuck in the huge traffic jams caused by the Delaware tolls. Sometimes we've come over the Delaware Memorial bridge on the way home from New Jersey, and been stuck in bumper to bumper all the way to Maryland. And then to pay through the nose for this "privilege"?

21. I drove from Lawrenceville, NJ to D.C. last weekend
The Delaware tolls were only a small fraction of the total between the Delaware Memorial Bridge, the MD tolls, and the NJ tolls.

BTW, never make the mistake of stopping at the Chesapeake House in MD at 11:00pm and getting a hamburger at Roy Rogers - the only thing colder than the burger was the Diet Coke, at least it was supposed to be cold.

http://www.newsday.com/news/local/wire/newjersey/ny-bc-nj--tollroads0123jan23,0,1852509.story

TRENTON, N.J. - The Senate budget chairwoman said a Wednesday hearing on Gov. Jon S. Corzine's plans to significantly increase tolls on some of the nation's busiest highways to pay state debt tests Corzine's avowed willingness to compromise.

I heard its because people from other states sneak in and out of NJ...

That gives Corzine   from me.

Although in NJ it's pretty difficult to avoid some of those tolls  I swear all the neighboring states pay for NJ folks to come and go from their own state since none of the bridges leading into NJ are NJ tolls

About 10-15 years ago you paid each way; it was like $1 each way. Then they figured since most people going over are coming back that night why not just charge one-way into New Jersey. It really did help with traffic flow.

The great David Bromberg lives in Wilmington, DE. My Uncle used to own race horses at Delaware Park. There are many Chickens. You are never far from somewhere else when you're in Delaware. They were first settled by Swedes, thus their women are comely and pale like alabaster. Did I mention the Chickens? Delawarians (sp?) actually sentenced a rich and powerful white man to death for murder. There are outlet malls. There are also Chickens.

Honestly Lynne, the toll booth thing is just something to tease you and get under your skin a little bit. If it weren't the toll booths, we would find something else to tease you about.

Just like Midlo and her boxed wine...

...and her minivan...

...and her unwashed children...

...well, you get the idea. Don't take it personally. It's just harmless fun. :hi:

FWIW, there is one toll booth in the state of Georgia...and I have to drive through the fucker every single day on the way to work. I could navigate around it...if I want to add at least 15 minutes to my commute.

My family went there on vacation in 1996 and we had a great time. I don't even remember any toll roads. Then again, I was a teenager and probably just wasn't paying attention.

I think it's just turned into one of those "Robb is a dingbat" kind of things, wherein everyone feels the need to give you a hard time about the toll roads. At least, that's why I bring it up...just to give you a good-natured hard time. I don't really give a rat's ass about them one way or the other. ;)

The Maryland tolls a few miles south are a buck more expensive but fast.

Deleware is undermanned, for whatever reason. It is the wait, more than the money.

Also, where southbound I-95 merges back together with 495 and 295 south of Wilmington is the permanent backup and gridlock.
