how many threads have you hidden in one day?
Edited on Wed Jan-23-08 07:36 PM by RainDog
oops. threads, not posts

for me, the answer is 36. not out of anger, etc. but because I'd be reading the lounge for days with all the tollbooth stuff, and I had to get away from the threads about death.

1. hard to say
I normally just head straight to the ignore button, before hiding a thread.. however, lately I've been using the hide button more so, especially if the poster is someone I generally like, but posted a thread that would normally get them on the i-list.

2. oh, this isn't about ignore!
I don't have anyone on my ignore list. I just visited the lounge a couple of times today and was sort of overwhelmed. occasionally I'll hide threads because I don't want to see the subject because it's too much for me... creepy or sad ..but today has been unusual. Like I said... not any ill will about it. just overwhelming.

3. I never hide 'em. Don't use Ignore, either.
Raw and unfiltered for me! Plus, the snarky replies to the sort of people who would be on my Ignore list, if I had one, are often priceless.

30. Same
I've never put anyone on ignore and I have no idea how to hide a thread or comment.

I was a wimp one time and it nearly cost me a friend: Several years ago an old buddy frequently interrupted with IMs just as I was going to sleep in the morning, about 3 or 4 AM Pacific. He was already up in the East. I blocked his IMs, just to save a half hour of sleep, and he figured it out when he could IM if he signed on via another name. I felt horrible about it, and that's the one and only time I'll use a function like that.

I do have a moron who harasses me from site to site via PMs, using different names, so I stay away from my PM box for long stretches.

6. I think I hid 35 the day after Anna Nicole Smith died,
Normally, I don't use it at all...but when
I get annoyed enough to start using it, I
don't stop until I'm finished.

12. hey, don't start hating on the tollbooth threaders!
;-)

some people have running jokes and that's okay. but that's what the hide function is for, right? for whatever reason you want to hide a thread. I've hidden threads in the past in GD, etc. so that my head didn't explode. it's hard to walk away when something upsets you, but it's worse to say stuff you regret later.

But yeah, the death threads were also snowballing and I had to hide some of them.

11. yeah
I know from personal experience that I cannot stay too long in that sort of despair. I have to do something to counter or stop it. The issue wasn't Ledger, but the volume of posts. -- and then all the threads that began because of.

to me, if someone else wants or needs to talk about it, that's okay with me. It's just that I can't do it.

14. YOU put it better than I ever could have --
Edited on Wed Jan-23-08 09:40 PM by Sugar Smack
It WAS the volume of posts and their state of despair. For example, I saw so MANY sweet, familiar faces that I really, REALLY like talking about suicide with regard to themselves, and over the last few years I have developed a real attachment to them. And the past 2 days have been filled with the very same posters talking about pain & despair I wouldn't wish on anyone. Each experience different and haunting.

I really craved levity. Something very dark came over the Lounge, and I'd been used to three or so years of every day being quasi-inane or lighthearted or funny, or thoughtful. Stuff like "replace the word Robbisadingbat in a song title" or "What's for dinner" or "What books changed your life". The past few days have been so the opposite of "lightheartedness" I began to think I was going to lose my mind with sadness.

17. I don't know what happened.
I honestly think when we heard about Heath Ledger and early reports that they thought it was suicide, we just opened up the flood gates and were all in the DU Lounge with melancholy. It was a very strange moment on DU. :/

The story touched a lot of people. And I think people's ideas & experiences in the darkest reaches busted forth. Whether it was something we'd thought about, considered, tried, or known loved ones who'd succeeded.

I just love kittens/cats so much. They are like women. You do your best to learn how to love them the way they want to be loved because they have such grace and beauty. And you are happy to do it. Or at least, that is how I look at it. :) :loveya:

21. 70 something
when the red sox won the world series. I think half the red sox fans here felt they needed to post a thread about it.

29. not a big baseball fan at all.
It was the year the red sox won the series the first time (recent history). I think they won another since then.

I'm prolly not the hide thread master, I'd think there were a couple other posters hiding all those threads too.

so, co-master, maybe? :P

I'll spare you all the tale of family woe, and just say that I really don't need to read them.
