10. my dog has one too, that I fear will be torn off as we live on acerage and he is alway running
around, but the vet said not to take it off. So, I expect something like that to happen to mine too.

I am so sorry for your baby. But, I am sure he will be fine.

12. After having repeated dew claw injuries
I took one of my dogs in for dew claw removal surgery last summer. He had dewclaws on all four legs that were removed. To minimize the pain as much as possible the vet amputated the lower joint of the dew claw (there is another more invasive dewclaw removal surgery) - kind of like removing only the lower digit of the thumb. He still has some short nubs where the dew claws used to be. But he doesn't have the ability to grow the nail itself so his dewclaws no longer catch and tear. Took about a month to heal.

Dewclaw injuries can be very painful. Once they occur they are more likely to repeat. As dogs age sometimes their dew claws tend to hang more loosely making them more likely to catch and tear.

Sending good vibes to Max.

15. Well he's OK
Edited on Sat Jan-26-08 01:12 PM by lost-in-nj
it was the front right paw. as soon as the vet took it off he was good to go...
didn't take the whole thing, just to where it was ripped and then cauterized it...

Thanks everyone...

16. glad to hear it and hope he heals fast
I've heard of dogs tearing the back dewclaws if they have them, and I can understand people taking them off preventatively.

My dogs actually use their (front) dewclaws to scratch their faces, help them hold rawhide bones, etc. They don't seem very movable but I've always figured they have feelings there. Is your dog on pain meds or anything?
